Rust is a really interesting game. You can effectively play it however you want, and, because of that, it can tell you a lot about the people who play it.

The good:
* solid base building
* fun tech tree growth
* research system to skip parts of tech tree
* fun resource gathering
* beautiful environments
* fun guns and armor/clothing
* interesting points of interest
* intense PVP
* interesting crafting system
* ability to win against players with higher value resources and weapons
* regular, ongoing updates
* fun cosmetics
* farming (you can grow cloth and food)
* hunting

The bad:
* a large portion of the player population is truly toxic
* you will die to other players a LOT, even if you are of no threat to them
* your bases WILL be raided while you are offline
* cheaters
* difficult to find casual friendly servers
* griefing is widely supported

Overall, I recommend Rust. If you are a more casual gamer, you may need to seek out servers that are friendly to casuals. The main servers typically require a lot of patience if you are a casual. If you are a "hardcore" gamer, then this game will likely give you many positives, but will also encourage some of your worst habits and behaviors.
