Dying Light

My Idea For A Perfect Game

I’ve been procrastinating a lot to write a review for Dying Light 1. This was not out of laziness, it was plainly due to me worrying if I would write a good review for this masterpiece. Dying Light is easily my top favorite game of all time. It is literally beyond perfect since it has everything I love in a video game. When I say this game is content-rich, I mean it. You can keep on playing this game for hours and hours & you might never get bored. This is probably the most passionate review I have written for a game and it might be the longest one too. I apologize in advance if I ever get carried away when trying to explain something! I’ll try not to make this review into a Wiki page with unnecessary information….No promises though.

About This Game

Storyline

I’ve probably played and finished this game over 10 times by now. Due to this, most of the storyline is tattooed on my brain. I remember the game’s plot more than I remember what I studied last night. I might be a bit partial on this segment since I love the game. I found the game’s story rather amusing and beautifully crafted. I’ve had friends who played the game and didn’t like the story. So yeah, it all comes down to personal preference.

There are two DLCs that add quite a lot of content; The Following and Hellraid. I will mention the plot of Hellraid in the DLCs segment & I’ll make a separate category for The Following since it has quite a lot of content within it. So, this is the base game’s plot:

Kyle Crane, an undercover operative who works for the GRE, gets sent to the zombie-crawling city “Harran”. He was tasked with the objective of retrieving an important file from a heartless tyrant named Rais. As he makes progress, he discovers some dark secrets and is forced to decide between fulfilling his objective given by the GRE or helping the survivors.

The story is filled with a lot of emotions. Romance, action, trust, betrayal, sadness, revenge, anger, etc. It’s the perfect blend of everything you expect in a well-laid-out plot! I’ve played this game so many times that I roughly remember the entire story in chronological order.

Gameplay Mechanics

Core Mechanics

The main reason I love this game is that they have my most favorite mechanics in one game. It’s basically the combination of these:
  1. Parkour.
  2. Open-World Setting.
  3. Zombies.
  4. Melee combat with parkour-infused attacks too.
  5. Ranged Combat (Guns, bows, shurikens, throwing knives, etc.)
  6. Crafting.

These are my most favorite mechanics/features in the game. Since the game was released in 2015, they had a lot of time to refine everything. All the mechanics in the game are as smooth as they can be. They’re literally flawless in my eyes. So, in this segment, I just mentioned the mechanics. I’ll go deeper into them in the upcoming segments!

Movement and Parkour

These are one of the main charms of this game. When you just start the game, you have only the basic moment abilities; walking, running, jumping, crouching, climbing, etc. But as you play the game and unlock skill points that you can use on the skill tree, you can unlock more advanced movement skills like sliding, wall running, rolling after landing, vaulting over zombies, etc. This not only gives you a goal to achieve i.e. completing the skill tree but also adds variety to your overall gameplay the more you play. Movement mechanics plays a major role in this game since you can’t hang around in a place for too long without facing the threat of getting attacked by zombies. It’s even worse during the night. I am glad they didn’t screw up in any way in this part.

Apart from the stuff I mentioned above, the game also has something that helps you in movement. You unlock it towards the end of the parkour skill tree. It’s the Grappling Hook. This is probably the best thing they included in the game as it oversimplifies movement. Luckily, it’s not technically overpowered since it has a usage cooldown. You literally get to higher ground in a matter of seconds instead of taking a while to climb. It is extremely useful during chases. But be wary, not all surfaces are “Grappable”. I highly recommend trying to unlock this as soon as possible as it proves to be very useful during several missions. It’s really not hard to get Parkour XP.
Visuals & Audio

The visuals are equally beautiful and grotesque. There are so many gore-related elements since you can literally slice up enemies. It’s pretty impressive for a 2015 game. There are even mods that enhance the visuals. I’ll just conclude this segment quickly. So, in conclusion, I am pretty pleased with both, the visuals and sounds this game has. I have no complaints!

Pros
  • Almost all mechanics in the game are as smooth as they can be. I love their fluid parkour system.
  • The Storyline is a roller-coaster of emotions. I personally enjoyed it.
  • There’s a huge variety of types of weapons and items you can use during combat. You have lots of ways to approach a fight.
  • Very high replayability rate since the game seldom gets boring.
  • It supports co-op. The game is extremely fun to play with a group of friends.
  • The “Be The Zombie” mode is very fun as it allows you to invade another player’s world as a volatile or help them as a survivor to fight against that volatile invader.
  • The game can be modded!

Cons

I love this game wholeheartedly. As a result of this, I don’t find any flaws in this game. But yeah, people who didn’t like this game may find a lot of flaws in it. In my books, it’s almost flawless.

Conclusion

I am sure this review shows you how much I admire this game. It’s my dream to make a game that’s like this. It has all the good stuff I look for in a video game. I obviously recommend buying this game. It goes on a good sale quite often. If you want to get all the DLCs, I recommend getting the definitive edition!
