Right from the start, the game gives off a familiar vibe to Origins. You’ll first dive into the storyline set in the distant past, before eventually shifting into the present timeline as you progress. The present-day protagonist is once again Layla Hassan — the Egyptian former Abstergo employee who has since switched sides to join the Brotherhood. Along the way, you’ll encounter a couple of new faces, though they don’t add much weight to the overall narrative. Beyond that, it follows much of the same formula as Origins. So, with that out of the way, let’s step back into history and focus on the heart of the story.


It’s worth noting right away that this installment doesn’t stray too far from Origins. Built on the same engine, the core gameplay systems feel immediately familiar, with only minor tweaks and a few new mechanics layered on top. For veterans of the series, that familiarity can be both a strength and a weakness — on one hand, it provides a comfortable sense of continuity, but on the other, it risks feeling like more of the same.

Where this entry truly distinguishes itself is in its narrative tone. As the developers teased during their E3 presentation, the story dives deeper into the fantastical than ever before. Mythical powers, supernatural abilities, and larger-than-life spectacles dominate much of the historical segment. This shift toward high fantasy adds a sense of wonder and visual flair, but it also changes the identity of the series in subtle ways. Longtime fans who cherished the franchise’s balance of history and grounded storytelling may find the spectacle occasionally overwhelming, while newcomers or players more open to mythic fantasy will likely appreciate the boldness of the direction.

In short, the historical narrative doesn’t reinvent the wheel mechanically, but its embrace of the mystical could either captivate or divide the fanbase, depending on what each player values most in the Assassin’s Creed experience.


At first glance, the gameplay doesn’t seem all that different from Origins, so I’ll focus on what truly stands out. One of the biggest improvements lies in how the game addresses one of the most glaring issues from the previous installment: enemy leveling.

In Origins, enemy levels were fixed by region — if you walked into a city where guards were set at level 32, they would always remain level 32, regardless of how far your character progressed. This created a strange imbalance: as you grew stronger, earlier areas became trivial, removing much of the challenge and immersion.

This new entry solves that problem elegantly. Enemy progression now scales alongside the player, ensuring that challenges remain consistent throughout the game. For example, if you return to face an enemy you once fought at level 32, expecting an easy victory after reaching level 33, you’ll be in for a surprise — that same enemy may have climbed to level 33 or even 34, matching your growth almost step for step. This system applies across the board, making the entire world feel alive and adaptive.

The result is a far more engaging experience. Battles remain tense, exploration feels rewarding, and progression never trivializes the game’s world. While some players may argue this reduces the sense of power fantasy that comes with outleveling enemies, it undeniably keeps the moment-to-moment gameplay more exciting and dynamic.
Combat System

At its core, the combat system remains largely familiar to Origins, but with a few key refinements. Adrenaline still plays a central role, though here it feels far more dynamic thanks to multiple bars and more frequent opportunities to unleash it. This makes encounters feel faster, flashier, and more rewarding. One major shake-up is the absence of the iconic Hidden Blade. Instead, players wield a broken yet immensely powerful spear, which doubles as both a primary weapon and a conduit for special abilities. Many of the spear’s most devastating moves require Adrenaline, tying progression tightly to combat flow.


The skill tree once again branches into three archetypes: Hunter, Warrior, and Assassin. Players can specialize early, shaping their playstyle to suit their preference, whether it’s ranged combat, melee dominance, or stealth. On top of that, the game allows you to slot eight special abilities, plus four bow-specific skills, each consuming one Adrenaline bar when activated. Additional situational abilities also demand Adrenaline, reinforcing its role as the heartbeat of combat. The result is a system that encourages tactical decision-making rather than button-mashing.


Weapons function much like they did in Origins. You can dual-wield melee arms — spears, swords, hammers, axes, maces — while carrying a bow for ranged attacks. Arrows come in a wide variety of types: Normal, Death, Poison, Fire, Explosive, and Paralysis, giving combat encounters a welcome layer of flexibility. The downside is resource management; arrows deplete quickly, and you’ll often find yourself hunting animals or gathering olives for crafting, since shops rarely stock meaningful quantities.

Armor design is another highlight. The game offers a wide range of visually striking sets, from heavy plate armor to lighter, more stylish options. Personally, I found lighter gear on Kassandra far more fitting, while crowns often looked better than bulky helmets — though of course, that’s down to individual taste.


For the most part, weapons and armor are earned through quests rather than shop purchases. Merchants play a smaller role, primarily serving as upgrade stations where you can enhance gear stats or add specific perks. This ensures that your equipment feels earned through exploration and achievement, though it also means casual players might find loot variety somewhat dependent on quest progression.


Taken together, these mechanics create a combat system that feels both familiar and fresh. The reliance on Adrenaline as a central resource keeps battles tense and tactical, while the spear’s unique abilities lend the game a mythic edge. However, the absence of the Hidden Blade may disappoint longtime fans who cherish its symbolic weight. The gear progression feels rewarding, though the reliance on crafting for arrows may frustrate those who prefer a smoother, shop-based economy.
