I keep coming back to it. Probably my all-time favourite game. It's difficult, and can be frustrating for some people, but I would absolutely recommend it.

It's Dwarf Fortress.

Update: After having now had the game for a week, I can now confidently say it really *is* Dwarf Fortress. What are you waiting for? Get it.

Expected to have like half an hour of fun in this, but turns out there's far more in this game than I thought. I'm generally not one for replaying games on different difficulties, but I'm really enjoying this. Not to mention that there actually is a story mode with actual story, and different gameplay than just the arena fights I expected from it.

A few years ago, they were deleting topics that disagreed with them from the forums, and development looked dead. I recently took a look to see if it had gotten anywhere, and it's really taken off. There's weekly developer livestreams, great interaction with players, and new content, bug fixes and optimizations rolling in regularly.

I love the freedom you have to mess around with the world, to create or change chokepoints as it fits your strategy. On the side of things to improve, to me, it feels a bit too fast paced as I like to think things through well and make sure everything's 100% right. And the game doesn't really like the scale I try to make things in.
