EA and Respawn just showed an incredible display of corporate greed. As much as I like Apex, I cannot in good faith recommend this game to anyone anymore. The Battle Pass monetization changes are beyond insulting and predatory.

Edit:

They've just backpaddled on the Battlepass changes. However, I still cannot trust EA and I'll keep my negative rating.

How to you make a sequel to the perfect game? This is the task the Derek Yu had in his hands when he decided to this game and how high the bar was set by the first one.

But he managed to deliver an amazing experience.

The graphics are charming and cute, and animations are top notch. Controls are tight and precise and they just feel right, and this is one of the reasons why the first Spelunky was amazing, and one of the main reasons the second one is also amazing. The levels are great and feel very unique, and there's a huge amount of variety in obstacles, paths and secrets.

The game is hard, but the journey to mastering it's levels and uncovering every thing it has to offer is a very rewarding one.

You'll have occasionally some RNG fuelled clown fiesta, but thats something very specific to the genre. And something roguelike players are expected to deal with. However, Mossmouth/Blitworks are doing a great job at tweaking the game when it comes to bugs or even changing cartain aspects of the game to make it more fair (like removing unavoidable damage, in some areas), adding incentives to take specific routes and making the game an all round more pleasant experience. It's a true labor of love.

A very interesting take on the "Where's Wally" books formula, bringing in to a digital format. Hidden Folks offers a good art style (hand drawn) and an amazing sound track (and sound effects) that's made entirely with mouth sounds. There's no Wally here, but there are a lot of funny characters to search and enviroments to interact. The game has a lot of charm and is a very chill experience.

If you are looking into the feeling of nostalgia from the Wally books or just searching for a relaxing ahd short game this is a very good pick.

Bonus points for having options to change the colors of the game to make it easy on the eyes (sepia tones and inverted).

There are three key words for this game:

1. Simple.

2. Challenging.

3. Addictive.

It's small levels are no small challenge. (And this is not a bad thing, they are just the right size).

If you want to truly complete this game, you'll have to push yourself to the limit of your skills and percercetion.

On top of that it has an Stellar soundtrack to keep you hypnotized!

The graphics are very minimalistic, the dev didn't need anymore than that to make a very good (and hard) game.

Edit (2020): Dropping Linux and Mac Support at March 2020, on top of greedy item shop monetization, lack of meaningful updates and poor comunication as of right now. On top of that they decided to remove every single DLC that was fairly priced (a lot of cars are as of right now unobtainable), maybe they will decide to resell the DLC on the item shop for 3 times the price it was before. Very noice.

Psyonix sold it's soul to EPIC, and they are now both showing their true colors.
Can't recommend until they reconsider the way they are handling the game.
Also can't wait until this game is removed from steam in favor of epic store just to add insult to injury.

I'll let my previous review written here to be a reminder of what this game was and what it could have been, what made it great in the first place....

Original 2019 updated review:

There's no doubt that Rocket League is one of the best games that came out in recent years.

It has a very simple premisse, but the devs took what they were aiming for (with everything they learned from SARPBC) and executed it perfectly, with refined and precise gameplay.

On the surface the game looks very simple, but it's just one of those that's easy to understand on the first look, but very hard to master.

It has incredible depth in it's mechanics and a lot to learn. Ranging from raw basic mechanical skill, to dribbling, aerials, positionioning and so on the games are always exciting and there is always something new to learn and improve.

Even if the game was just the so called "Soccar" it would already be perfect.
1v1s, 2v2s, 3v3s and the casual chaotic 4v4 all are play very diferently, even if it's just the amount of players that is changing.

The devs, however, keep adding free casual modes (Mutators for private matches, Dropshot, Rumble [Mario Kart style gameplay with power ups], Hoops [It's own version of basketball with cars], and even Hockey. Like Soccar, every game mode plays and feels diferently.

Psyonix is also doing an amazing job in pushing the competitive scene with the RLCS and other big tournaments are just in the horizon for Rocket League (Dreamhack here we go).

If you want an online game that is competitive and it's very rewarding to both play and master it RL is the game for you.

If you want to play it casualy and without pressure, Psyonix also got you covered with awesome casual and party modes.

Edit:

Crates (this can, be a No, no, for some people), free and constant updates, new structure of events and features.

About crates, on one hand I think they are mostly harmless, but in other hand we have to keep in mind that their randomness can be inherently addictive, so this os something to Keep in mind.

Overall, the availability on multiple plataforms, the constant updates and good comunication by Psyonix are things that helps to push the game foward, making It even better than it was when released.
