Among the people who've played it, it's really not underrated nor overrated. It feels exactly like you expect it to be from your first impression, but also a lot more. The unique and labored artstyle works together with the soundtrack and the culture of the setting to feel like a masterpiece of "comfy." The characters are quite funny though sometimes one-note.

The story definitely shines: it starts off seeming episodic, but perhaps halfway through, the protagonist gets thrown into the conspiracy and intrigue of the French revolution and everything that happened in the game becomes connected. There are plenty of twists and moral quandries. It does multiple endings quite well, largely because they're not just "endings;" the story converges with perhaps an hour left based on your choices during the previous chapter (and it's simple to figure out what you have to do on a replay of the chapter without having to look anything up)

Not everyone would enjoy it. It is a bit short compared to other similar games in its niche/that it's based on, plus, despite this it manages to feel awkwardly slow-paced at several points, and the logical reasoning the game puts the players through isn't usually appropriately challenging.
