Well it took four years to come out and was it worth the wait? Sort of.
It pains me to say as fan of the Nancy Drew games but this particular entry feels like a step back. This was the quickest title in the series that I've played in a long time beating it on Master Sleuth difficulty in just under 8 hours with the only hitch being the absolutely terribly designed (For master difficulty anyway) wave frequency puzzle. The voice acting is very hit and miss with me laughing out loud at the some of the lines that had sudden tonal changes and audio that really hammered in the fact that the recording was done at different times. And there was even an NPC that had a line of dialogue that I'm going to assume a fan sent in because it sounds like it was recorded on a smartphone.
The new character rigs that were hyped up for this game look strange to say the least, the teeth really stand out like they are too bright for the mouth and even clipped through the models lips a few times. Their movements ARE smoother then in the previous games and they also are more animated outside of just the cut scenes which is nice. I can't say that I like them better than the previous models we had in the older games though.
The story wasn't bad overall with some laughs and touching moments but the ending definitely felt a little rushed.
The puzzles with the exception of the aforementioned wave frequency one were nicely challenging on master difficulty if a little obtuse in their instructions. I wish there was more to the puzzles and the game though because while I did for the most part enjoy what there was it was also over too soon.
All in all this honestly doesn't feel like a game that took over four times the series standard development time to make, I understand that they were porting their development over to the new and better game engine but it just feels like it's a lesser title overall than the previous games in the series.
So would I recommend Midnight in Salem to people?
Yes if you are already a fan of the franchise and want to experience Nancy's newest case but,
No if you are just getting into the series, there are many far better titles in the collection (Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon is my personal favourite).

Patch 1.2 has gone a long way towards improving Imperator and helping the game to find it's own spot in the Paradox game lineup. It still struggles with having most of it's gameplay mechanics being taken from other Paradox grand strategy titles while failing to have any unique mechanic of it's own. It will be interesting to see where they can take this title however because the mechanics they did take from other games like Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, and Victoria have the potential to mesh really nicely together. While it is still not at a great state the steps they have taken appear to be going in the right direction and I am hopeful this can become another pillar of the Paradox grand strategy lineup.

Simple concept but with a large variety of unique units. Games are short but intense and fun.

This game defies standard game conventions, there is no combat, only basic puzzles and is a type that has become known as a walking simulator. With no action and only the vaguest notions of suspense if you are a player that plays games to shoot stuff up this probably isn't for you. But if you want a game that you can play in the evening and for lack of a better term experience then this is the best I have found so far. Individually the components aren't anything special, the story is decent, the visuals are passable and the music has some amazing pieces but is overall not going to win any awards. But the sheer imaginative world that Giant Sparrow manages to build with all these different parts is breathtaking. This game can be completed in a single evening, but I couldntt help but feel that every moment of it was unique and left an imprint. While not for everyone, if you are looking for a world to lose yourself in for a few hours and get told not just a story but an experience this is a good one.
