Finding a cool and unique game that is actually fun these days is rare, so seeing one kill itself right before my eyes is incredibly disappointing.

The game in its beta state felt complete and was incredibly fun. Matches were fast paced and whichever team achieved five points, by a margin of two, won the match. Now, outside of quickplay, both teams have to reach three sets of three points with a pause in between sets for everyone to pick what were once trainings one could choose before a match. These are passive boosts to an aspect of a character that can help them reach their full potential, and are now erased after the match has ended. They are also random, which means you may not be able to play your character in your specific playstyle for what are now higher-stakes 20-30 minute matches. The magic of the previous version was how quickly you won if you were more skilled than your opponents, how quickly you lost if they were more skilled than you, and how tense matches got if both teams were equally skilled trying to get two points above the other. Losses didn't matter since you could easily get into another match afterwards, and getting on a win streak felt all the more satisfying. You could play hours of matches and not realise how much time has passed. Now matches are long enough to have one or two be exhausting.

The developer's justification of the temporary, randomised trainings mid-match is that the longer the beta was live, the more similar each match felt. This was a good thing, as it allowed the players to become accustomed to their characters and how they were supposed to function given the right trainings for the player's playstyle. Now it is easy to forget which ones you chose in the 15 seconds your are given to chose when you consider how chaotic the actual gameplay is. Additionally, Counter-Strike hasn't changed in twenty years, and it seems to be doing well for itself. Having matches be similar is not a fault, but the current system
they made to combat a non-issue is.

Another thing that makes matches take too long is the addition of what I will call goal-blocks. Previously, there were walls that retracted and extended throughout the match that blocked both goals. Whichever team was in the lead had their walls retract faster than the team losing, giving the team losing a chance to attack for a short time while their wall was still extended. Whoever is in the lead doesn't need an advantage over the other team, so the design at the time was good. Now there are goal-blocks. These are difficult to hit targets near each team's goals that will retract the walls once all are hit with the ball. This makes matches drag on, as one goalie can usually guard at least one of the goal-blocks for a long time, which means even more time spent in a game that used to have quick and fun matches. The charm of the worldwide beloved sport of football/soccer is that there's one person guarding a large goal with the help of the other players that are outside of the goal box, so adding a mechanic that makes it impossible to score unless you hit a prerequisite makes the game not fun.

Everything else that has changed is at most a minor annoyance, such as splitting up the end-game screen into three screens, so it's more difficult to share a screenshot of if you had a good game.

A common "gotcha" to the changes in ranked and the normal gamemodes include "Just play quickplay so you don't have to deal with the changes." What if you want to play the game you once loved with people around your skill level? Quickplay does not take skill level into account when forming players for a match, only ping. This means that the probability of completely destroying or being destroyed by the other team increases, and while it's nice for an ego boost, it's preferable to play opponents around your skill level to challenge yourself; Something you can no longer do if you prefer the previous version's gameplay compared the the current.

I will gladly change this review if these issues are fixed. It baffles me how a team can make a game for years, show off a fantastic pre-release product, and kill it in front of you when it was supposed to be finished.

One thing about change is that in most modern games, it is necessary. Games like Counter Strike should never be compared with a new, innovative project. One has a huge and hardcore playerbase, the other is just growing out its wings.

Just reading these reviews back and I don't understand how the devs are in the wrong for changing the game frequently. I think it keeps the game alive. If it was the same fast paced few minute matches I would have not bothered to put over hundred hours into this game - it would be boring. Also, I don't find it wrong to play against worse or much better players in game modes like quickplay. I agree though, it wouldn't be wrong if you could set to look for players around your level, but after all, I learned the most when not matching with players around my level - mostly about positioning, which characters match my playstyle, etc. This might only be me, but I enjoy what they did to the game and I hope they keep this up with interesting new features like game modes, sparks and characters.

Who the hell wants to breeze through matches constantly? Who also wants to just kick a ball into the goal? Thats boring af. The little things you gotta hit before the walls to the goal move are perfect for making the matches last a couple of minutes. I honestly wouldn't even play this game if they didn't have those walls. I do NOT like seriously fast gameplay, hell, the game is paced enough as it is

What I meant by mentioning your playtime was to show how flawed the game was in beta and its replayability reflect through a player's stats. From my point of view, the number itself is more reliable while opinions are often subjective and biased, even my opinions can be biased sometimes but I'm glad you tried to see how I didn't push it on ya.

After reading your replies I realized you got hold by nostalgia too much, to the point that thinking it's better to have repetitiveness than fun or balanced just so people can master them easier. Are we just ignoring how ass CSGO when it first launched? It got better little by little with constant updates back then, only after 5-6 years they are confident enough to slow down. Omega Striker is still in that phase where they need to experience things, they NEEDED the changes.

I'll pray for you that Odyssey will make a classic mode for you guys some days but I doubt many people would flock into that mode as it was the lack of depth killing beta.

Another issue I had with this game is with the strike ability (i.e., the main kick ability). It just feels like the outcome of a strike battle is determined by rock-paper-scissors. I can't take a game like this seriously when the main ability works like this.

Mazdingo,
I'm not trying to say the only people who like the changes are new players, as someone already commented here that they're new but saw footage of the beta and prefer the old version, but I can understand someone getting invested into this style if this is someone's first look into the game. The core gameplay is still there, just soured by the release, and considering how many new people are playing the game now, in reference to the third paragraph of my response to Choncc, it's understandable how some are defending it. I would also like a classic mode, but I also want to see if they can make these changes benefit the game rather than straight up removing them first.

The Dapper Dragon,
Similar, not same. Unless you play with the same teammates, using the same characters, against the same opponents also using their characters, on the same map, then it is similar, not same. Similarity breeds familiarity, which can allow for a player to use their characters and skills better. I've known someone who deleted every map from Counter Strike except for Dust2. I admit I find that extreme a bit strange, but more power to them, because they were really good at playing on that map due to their familiarity with it.

The problem is that any kind of early access *is the release*. That's when people start talking about the game, sharing opinions about it, create communities on social media, acquire a playerbase, and so on. This sets the anchor on what is expected of the game, and moving the anchor too far can alienate players who liked the game as it was, especially for an online-only game with no way to play the previous version that will not be playable once service has stopped. There are dead games with server emulators made by superfans with technical knowledge. These fans might not have stuck around to help the game they loved if the anchor had moved too far.

sorawild,
I suppose it is a problem of expectation. I expected to play what I did during the beta with some neat additions that don't disrupt the flow of the game, which is not what I received. I generally dislike MOBA games, so I expected ex-Riot employees to identify what that could be to create a better game; Something that I got when I played the beta, but not any more.
