Not as good performance but more slice of slice stuff like keybinds.
You could always remap your controller in steam overlay and make a profile for each game (say one of the ds games you play sideways, or even just a button prompt to pop an item in new super mario bros.)
I have a couple controller profiles like that on my steam deck
I actually managed to install the Core (MelonDS) and boot the game after watching a tutorial. But even after that, I see fewer screen layout settings, and I can't even rebind movement keys to WASD, something I had no issue doing in the standalone MelonDS.
Go to Download cores in settings its a icon with a rocket ship then download the one for the consoles you want.
Then you can load games via telling the program what folders your games are in or you can even just drag and drop.
