Having played tabletop wargames, this definitely scratches that itch. The mechanics are fairly straightforward, and the rules are easy to pick up. However, I do have one complaint: the dice. There is a loading screen tip stating that the dice are mathematically fair. It jokes about them being possessed by a demon, but insists they are fair. They are most definitely not. I have seen the ai routinely beat the statistical odds, while I struggle just to make the odds on far too many rolls. A fun game nonetheless, but do keep that in mind.

It's not a game, it's an addiction.

This game is pretty addicting. The gameplay does get repetitive, but with the plethora of mods out there, it never gets stale.

So this has to be one of my favourite games. If you like Fallout, you'll probably like this game too. While it is known to be a bit buggy, it seems to run pretty smoothly for me, and if you find the bugs too much to handle, then you're in luck. The game has a huge modding community that I believe fixed many of the bugs and even added several improvements to an already great game. Speaking of which, I should probably say a few things as to why I think the game is good:

1. It's a sandbox game with survival elements. You're guns break and jam. You need food. And you need to find these things.
2. Decent variety of weapons. More can be added with mods
3. Gun physics. The guns aren't lasers. The bullets drop and occasionally ricochet. Also, there's a slight time delay from when you fire to when your bullet hits.
4. Amazing continuous atmosphere. The game does not revolve around you. Leave an area? When you come back, your favourite NPC in that area could have been killed.
5. While you can get better and better equipment, there is never a time when you become practically invincible. You can be walking around in an exoskeleton with a gauss rifle, and if you turn a corner and run into a bandit and take a shotgun blast point blank to the head, guess what. You're still dead.

This game is freaking beautiful. It plays something like an interactive movie, but that's ok, as it envelopes you in the storyline and it's amazing hand-drawn art. I believe the entire freaking game is hand drawn. That's ridiculous. But it adds an appeal to it that isn't seen elsewhere.

It is essentially Civilization in space. With a touch of Gratuitous Space Battles, since you design all of the units.
