Cat Quest II is a hack-and-slash, action-adventure RPG and exploration-based dungeon crawler.

I’ve played the first game on the other platform with 100% achievements. The gameplay in this game is more or less the same.

There are a few differences, though. This game has a more crisp look overall. There are more diverse weapons (melee as well as ranged) this time around. Some of the old enemies are removed, and some new ones are added with tweaked attack patterns. There are two large maps to be explored: a forest and a desert. The weapons can be upgraded also along with the spells. The addition of new spells with some old spells keeps the gameplay somewhat fresh.

The game has two modes: solo (that I played) and local co-op. You will play with two characters: a cat and a dog. In solo mode, you will control one character, and the game will control the other one. You can switch between two at any time. If you are down with your playing character, it switches to the other one. So there is no instant game over. You have a chance to revive the downed character and move forward.

The gameplay is simple. You are on a series of fetch quests. You will hack and slash through enemies along the way. I liked the dungeons in this game. They are more diverse, design-wise and gameplay-wise. I liked clearing those.

It is a longer game compared to the first one. It may take around 7 to 8 hours if you are playing normally without going for 100% achievements. If you are a completionist, you have to do significant grinding to reach a certain level to clear remaining challenging dungeons (available after the main campaign is over). You can play the game in a new mode with some modifiers that make the gameplay challenging. It is not necessary to complete the game with modifiers repeatedly as it was the case in the first game to get 100%. That was a relief.

The music is the same. The sound serves its purpose. All the interactions are text-based with some cat and dog sounds here and there. The story is simple. The dialogues are funny and full of puns throughout (felt overwhelming at times).

You should play the game in sessions to avoid monotony.

If you liked the first game, you would like playing this one too. Get it on sale if you are interested.

My verdict: 7/10
