I am pretty sure that everything that could be said about 7 Days to Die has already been said in other reviews. It has spent over 10 years in early access before releasing this year after all. I have jumped on this train about half way through I believe and went in and out with each major update since then because of the major potential I believed the game had despite the rough edges.

Even after the 1.0 release it still clunky as hell despite some major improvements on that front. It looks much better than 5 years ago but I would still struggle to call it pretty. The physics are still a bit of a joke, especially when you put your foot into one of the 5 available vehicles and go for a joyride around the different biomes that make up the world map.

The ride might be a bit choppy since the game seems to be a bit of a resource hog (at least for me and my semi-recent, high-mid range rig) but despite all the aforementioned flaws quite enjoyable. The world is vast and filled with hand-crafted mini dungeons that scale well in difficulty to provide a reasonable challenge for both a fledgling explorer and seasoned veteran. You will start by going to regular houses, continue with mansions and end with malls and military bases. Many of them are filled with numerous surprises and little secrets that make them worth exploring. Compared to the dungeons, I find the outside world a bit lacking, apart from occasional landmark there is not much to talk about. The textures and models are not the greatest, forests are thinly populated by trees (unless you plant them yourself) and zombies are pretty scarce.

Even though I would appreciate if the world looked better and was more populated, it does serve it's purpose as a place full of resources to mine, trees to cut down and cars to disassemble. And you will need to get all the resources you can get because the crafting and building system in 7 Days to Die is the actual meat of the game. There is a plenty of weapons and armor kits, as well as numerous tools to help you on your journeys as well as with building up your base. The block based building system and a almost fully destructible terrain encourage a creative freedom letting you build a fort of your dreams. You can then set it up with number of traps and even completely automate a lot of the systems using a pretty comprehensive electricity tool set. Do you want a drawbridge going over a moat that gets automatically lowered using a sensor on the wall above it as you approach on a bike returning from your latest raid? Here it's possible.

Finally a short mention of the event the game gets its name from. Every 7 days (unless you set it up differently) a horde of zombies will attempt to get to that sweet living meat of yours and keep going until you fall or the sun gets up again. That's where the forts and traps come in because they will keep relentlessly coming, clawing through walls and ground to get a bite, each week getting increasingly stronger while you sweat to upgrade your fort. These events are a lot of fun, and if you push the game to the limit with the amount of zombies you allow to spawn at the same time (though that's insanely resource intensive), quite nerve breaking.

At some point the repeated process of repairing your base every week after each attack becomes quite a slog and you run out of places to explore but by then you have had at least 50 hours of fun and that's easily worth the price in my book. So yes, I do recommend 7 Days to Die. What are you still doing here? You should already be installing it.
