Early Access Review
Even in its early access build Nebulous offers decent balance, deep strategy, rewards good tactics, and skill expression.

Balance: There have been a number of different meta builds which were oppressive to say the least, the thing which always made it bearable was the shot first kill first nature of many meta builds. That being said the meta builds could be beaten by hard counter builds and even goofy builds if you were good enough.

Strategy: I have spent almost as much time designing fleets I have actually playing them, while finding a meta strike fleet on the workshop will suffice for most peoples needs if they want to jump in and play I always enjoyed making a fleet that would excel at destroying enemy scout corvettes effectively blinding the enemies heavy hitters. Many maps would play out in very similar ways which made maps learnable.

Tactics: No matter how good your fleet might have been it took time to learn how to execute with it and be successful. On top of actually executing the basic capabilities of your fleet each ship would need to be learned specifically to optimize your fleets performance and make the difference in tough situations

Concept: I love the overall concept of the game, a "near future" sci-fi capital ship RTS, it marks a step deeper into the sci-fi RTS genre. The three dimensional maps, ship controls, and available weapons and systems give this game a great identity and unique feeling.

Great turn-based rpg. The affinity system is easy to learn but it takes time to get a good enough handle on it to make the strongest units possible. Balancing the resources needed to upgrade units means you need to make meaningful decisions on which of your units you invest in and by extension which heroes you invest in. The way you can mix different damage types and attack orders adds to the puzzle of figuring out how to make a squad that will have the right attack to get through certain enemies, all the while the enemy formations change so different combinations are better at different stages of the game. A deep and fun game that I highly recommend.

So much about this game just takes up time. While the full motion battle sequences are nice the camp segments and much of the story just take up so much time. The story also isn't very compelling, I like basic stories that have soapy twists to switch up the tempo; I don't like when it takes me thirty minutes just to play a game for five minutes then have to wait ten minutes while switching from cut scene to dialogue that I don't even participate in as the player then to another cut scene. I don't hate the story I just want more game play between my story. The game also introduces your crew, then adds two new members of our crew, then you meet three new characters before you even get to know the crew.

It's just not fun. After the awe of huge battles starts to fade you start realizing the faction balance is way off. Weapons progression is pay to win, with non-faction weapons being the best. Vehicle combat is a boring contest of who has the most upgrades, where only rarely does positioning actually matter. While the mission rewards are nice for jump starting a new character, the final rewards are just a grind rather than a reward for some specific achievement. Rather than making the achievement for a special weapon to do something like get 5 kills without reloading or 20 kills without resupplying, its just to grind out almost 6000 kills across 5 weapons which aren't even unique.
