Only played a couple levels, and I can see how fantastic of a boomer shooter this is except for one major flaw that, for me, ruins this game: you get unlimited respawns on death, and everything you killed remains dead. There's no death penalty, you just show up at the last accessed "Nexus" point and these are all over the place. It's like playing an arcade game with infinite coins/credits - the ones like TMNT where a coin lets you continue from where you died. No challenge whatsoever.

And then, from the opposite spectrum of bad game design, as there are no mid-mission saves of any kind, your progress is only saved in between levels, so don't bother launching the game unless you know you have enough time to finish the level, otherwise you'll lose all your progress (though I guess you could always just keep the game running until you have more time to play hours or whenever later).

Graphics are great, gunplay is great, monsters gib pleasingly, but I just cannot recommend this game. If they ever add the ability to quicksave, so that on death you can load your most recent quicksave and try not to die again instead of just respawning near where you left off, I'll gladly change my review to positive.

Edit: I went ahead and beat the campaign. It ends on a nothing-note, with a text box pretty much telling you that nothing you did made any difference. OK. The good thing is that this final level had no checkpoints so it was actually a challenge, I had to dial the difficulty back down to Hard to beat it.

An incredible immersive sim, and a much better spiritual follow up to System Shock than any of the Bioshocks could ever dream of doing. I didn't really care for the twist ending, but aside from that this is probably my favorite game of the past 10 years.

Whoever at Microsoft made the decision to close the studio is a moron.

Eh, it's not great, but I enjoyed it enough, and what else can you ask of a game I got for $0.99 in card monies? Get it on deep sale if you need to scratch that metroidvania itch on the (very) cheap.

I was wondering why I have frequent random stutters and slowdowns in emulated 30+ year old games, turns out it's most likely because of the Enigma Protector malware that Capcom forced into this package.
