I enjoyed that the moral of the story was to stop playing video games and talk to people. However, I refuse.

Another Vampire Survivors rougelite. The twist in this one is that progression is based on randomly generated equipment drops similar to Diablo. While this is interesting in concept, in practice it means you don't get stronger unless you randomly drop a higher rarity item. It also means you can get stuck without an item slot such as a weapon for multiple runs when you unlock a new character.

However, my biggest annoyance with the game isn't the items. It's how blatantly they ripped off Hades. Obviously games within the same genre borrow ideas from each other, but this is straight up shameless. The way all the UI elements look and appear on the screen, the stylized characters that pop up and talk to you when you get an upgrade, the lobby that you can walk around in and speak to other characters, the training ground, extreme measure you can put on for harder runs. There's even a snarky talking skeleton.

If anything it makes me appreciate Hades more because this is just a pale imitation. And my god is the dialogue bad. Saying it was written like a 14 yo writes texts to their friends would be a compliment. And some characters inexplicably talk in text shorthand (IDK my BFF Jill) and use text emojis like ^_^
For a game set in a fantasy world with orcs and mages and knights, this just looks lazy and is honestly quite embarrassing.

Overall, the gameplay itself is fun, which is what matters most in games like these. If you like grinding for items it will be even more enjoyable, but everything besides the combat leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Still holds up. The visuals aren't amazing, especially in the pre-rendered cutscenes, but the gameplay and story are compelling. Didn't want to put it down; it's a real page-turner :)

Played the remaster which is Epic Games store exclusive. Took me 11 hours.

After beating this I can say that Halls of Torment is the best roguelike in this genre. Vampire Survivors does a lot of cool things, but there are way too many characters and weapons and the DLC breaks the game. Visually the game is a bit of a mess as well. Halls of Torment is much more cohesive. Better than Brotato though; That game looks like butt.

If you enjoy mystery/puzzle solving indie games, you will not be disappointed. It's like Obra Dinn with a more interesting art style that doesn't overstay its welcome.

Very simple and addictive Vampire Survivors clone. Easy to play without a brain because there's really not much variation in builds.

I prefer it to Vampire Survivors and Brotato

The game is out of early access, but it certainly doesn't feel like it. You will experience crashing and performance issues, likely multiple times in the same play session. Loading times are the worst I've seen in a modern game. A lot of the core mechanics from the previous tide games are missing and the class diversity is on the lower side. The weapons impact your gameplay more than anything and it feels like there is an objectively correct choice for a lot of the feats/talents. There also isn't much of a story tying everything together.

However, the issues begin to fade away when you actually load into a mission. The core gameplay is rock solid. I only put 24 hours into VT2 right before this game released, but the combat here was immediately more fun to me. The guns all feel terrific and the impact of the melee weapons is fine-tuned. The enemies are better and more dynamic and encourage team play. The incredible graphics/design and soundtrack are immediately noticeable. Hitting a high level mission that required coordination with three friends is some of the best multiplayer fun I've had recently.

But then the mission ends and you hit another long loading screen to come back into the sparse hub world that reminds you of the unfinished state. Acquiring weapons is done the worst possible way with a time-based shop that refreshes every hour, which is already annoying in a mobile game where you can quickly load in. What makes it more frustrating is that Fatshark already figured out an optimal system in Vermintide 2 with strongboxes that you would earn purely through gameplay. This not only made finishing a mission more rewarding and fun, it also gave a sense of purpose to the secondary objectives as completing them would upgrade your lootbox to give better rewards including premium shop currency. And once you hit 30 on a character there is no sense of progression. No prestige system, no overall account level, just sitting by the shop hoping for a slightly better gun.

Despite the rough edges I think what's here is worth $40, especially if you can get 1-3 friends to play the game with. And in a year or two when they add more progression, classes, weapons, and modes like the incredible Chaos Wastes from VT2 $40 will seem like a steal.
