23 Hours played
I played the first hour or so of this game on a friend’s PS3 way back when it came out and I loved it, just not enough to buy a PS3 for one game. Of course when it came out on steam 10 years later I immediately jumped at the chance to add it to my wish list and wait for it to go on sale.

So here we are 14 years after I started the game I have finally, finally played it all the way through and I still love it.

The game is all about the story, and the story is fantastic. I want to keep this review spoiler free as I think loses a lot on a second play through when you know what is coming. It excellently keeps you engaged through the twist and turns of the plot. There is a great sense of atmosphere. The choices you make really make you feel like part of the story, some decisions can have small changes but others have drastic effects of the end of the game. However when I said the game is fantastic, I mean it is fantastic if you don’t think about it too hard. If you just go with the flow of the story and see where it leads it is very entertaining but if you think about the ramifications of what is happening it is riddled with plot holes. Only the most incompetent police force would have failed to arrest this murderer and allow them to become a serial killer.

The game looks good. The environments are detailed and the characters are mostly well animated. The voice acting is good and the music is not obtrusive but does its job. All of this helps you get drawn into the story.

Most of the time the controls work really well and complement the tension of the story. However they are a bit janky on the PC which I think is almost inevitable when porting from gimmicky PlayStation Move controls. A couple of issues to note are the sections where you have to use A & D to look round to find things to interact with. It is really difficult to interact with items in the middle as the lightest press of A or D can send you looking off to the edges. The other notable problem is the lag between the camera changing and orientation of the direction controls to match. This frequently leads to getting stuck walking back and forth between 2 camera angles until you get used to waiting a moment when the camera changes.

So all in all this was worth the wait and I can heartily recommend.
