Despite having a lot of content in this expansion, especially for FromSoft standards, it's not filled with a lot of GOOD content.

While the over world design was ambitious, it's convoluted, it's very hard to tell with the fragments what areas are traverse-able, what areas are high or low or what areas even are sometimes (the Abyssal Forest is just a smudge of black, some orange would be nice). Also a lot of areas, have very specific ways of reaching them are just ridiculous, like the Church District later in the game, which you can't reach unless you go ALL THE WAY to Bonney Village which is way down South of the entire map. This is bad map design

Scadutree fragments was a great idea, executed poorly. You see, you never needed ALL the golden seeds to reach max flasks in base game and you don't need all of them to even beat the game. But in SoTE, you NEED all of them to reach your maximum potential and actually stand a chance and a lot of them are hard to find. Speaking of...

It was indeed difficult. And since it's a FromSoft DLC, OF COURSE it's harder than base game so I shouldn't be complaining right? Well here's the thing. I don't think the game was TOO HARD, I think it was TOO UNFAIR. A lot of aspects that people hated in base game get amplified, and it only shows how truly unfair some of these design choices were. I don't mind delayed attacks since it's just a pure case of rhythm, my problem is with attacks that either lead to another attack that is lightning quick, essentially making dodging impossible or the sheer amount of attacks that last too long to dodge. This is very prevalent in the final boss where every attacks usually leads to a random AoE that occurs for like no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reason and is usually done to make dodging impossible. Weird dodge rhythms I can get behind (thanks Sekiro), but they clearly didn't think about some of these strings in the context of how many I frames and recovery frames players have.

On top of that, the Scadurtree fragments are fine mostly in concept, but my big problem is that, combined with the convoluted map, and the fact that there's no redundant fragments making it so you don't need to collect EVERY SINGLE ONE (much like the Golden Seeds for flasks), they are frustrating to work with. And while we could sit here and go "but you don't NEED them" which is objectively true, the amount of damage everyone does at the START of the DLC is ludicrous even compared to base game, making them essential for progress.

I can't say ♥♥♥♥ about the lore because despite reading every item I came across, I still don't quite get what the hell was going on. Some quest lines have OG DS1 levels of easy of miss-able ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, with some quests ending by simply WALKING to the wrong area, unlike base game which ends quest lines usually after a boss. On top of that, some of the steps are so obscure that figuring it out on your own, which is viable in base game, is a death sentence. From what I understand Miquella was guiding us through the lands to, I think help him ascend maybe? But in the end he just decides "nah I'm going to kill you now". I don't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ get it, I know FromSoft games are usually like this, but every game at least gave you a goal, DS1: Relight the flame, Bloodborne: FInd the Paleblood, Sekiro: Save Kuro, but I don't even know what the hell we're doing in the realm of shadow.

The only positive thing I can think that's good about this DLC is that the new items are neat and Mohg beat the alligations. Overall a 4/10 DLC. I still don't get the hype despite finishing the DLC
