BEAVER BEAVER BEAVER BEAVER BEAVER BEAVER BEAVER BEAVER BEAVER

Seriously though, this is a phenomenal colony sim that you absolutely must play if you're into the genre.

With unique water physics and associated fluid management, Timberborn adds new dimensions and mechanics to voxel city-building that'll keep you entertained for hours.

Vertical architecture and grandiose engineering projects pair with adorable little beavers for a wholesome and conscientious land- and resource-management experience.

TL;DR Never have philosophical quandaries been so damn boring
ReadGraves (TM) makes the classic mistake of being a morally corrupt and overly critical narrator. Making difficult decisions whilst being judged by someone you have no respect for does not a fun game make. This tries very hard to be Deep (TM) and Ironic (TM) but does not succeed at either, resulting in a dry and trying experience. Not worth the money, not even on sale. Save yourself the coin and find something better.

TL;DR Do you like mazes? If yes, play this (and the rest of the series)

An enjoyable, simple maze-solving game. Some players report struggling with controls: just play with a joystick and you're all set. This one is twice as good as the last one, if time-to-completion is your chosen metric. Took me 64 minutes, cost me 32 pence; 0,5p/min seems like great value to me.

If you don't like mazes, why are you even reading this review? Look, this does what it says on the tin. Simple maze-solving game. Took me 32 minutes, cost me 32 pence; 1p/min seems like good value to me.

TL;DR Great concept, terrible execution. Possibly the definition of form over function.

I want to love this. It's a interesting and engaging concept - anthropomorphised buildings with likes and dislikes all jostling for a position in this weirdly 2D side-scrolling city. Unfortunately, the controls are fiddly & frustrating and the mechanics poorly explained if not simply poorly thought-out.

That the game is difficult is no issue at all - it's an engaging enough concept to make puzzle-solving fun. Alas, the mechanics are so convoluted and unclear that it quickly becomes frustration central.

Although each type of business has set requirements and effects, these are very poorly presented, with the player having to go back through the menu system time and time again to remind themselves of what they are. You will waste such considerable time scrolling through poorly-designed menus that any fun is sapped out of the experience.

As much as I love the idea of anthropomorphic city, this concept would lend itself much better to an abstracted tile-based puzzler with a clean, refined UI able to display all necessary info on mouse-over.

TL;DR A charming little gem of a game that will leave you feeling warmly nostalgic for something you probably can't quite put your finger on.

This is a truly delightful little experience of a game. Short and sweet, no pointless filler, no unnecessary flair, it is only and exactly what it needs to be. Gives a very alternate-universe vibe and filled me with a fuzzy feeling of comfort. Well worth the half-hour of catching and releasing fish... and you'll probably feel nostalgic enough to return and clear your head at Clawfish station another day.

As an added bonus, the dev is kind and responsive and added accessibility settings (FOV, mouse speed & acceleration) very soon after I commented that the limited FOV was nausea-inducing for those with simulation sickness.

Recommendation for hardcore fans of the genre.

This is an undeniably FUN game, only let down by some clunky menus and a lack of UI vision. The concept is great, with running the chaotically psychedelic or spookily dank hotel of your dreams now a real possibility.

The vast majority of bugs present at launch have now been fixed, with no framerate issues and far fewer catalogue errors than before. There are still bugs, but the devs continue to interact with the community and yet another bugfixing patch is on the way.

I will be putting in more time here, but the UI clumsiness is a definite detractor from how enjoyable the game otherwise could be. The fact that there are thousands of furniture/decoration/colour/flooring/etc. combos is enticing, but actually sifting through the menus to find that one item you once saw can be frustrating.

Still, if you're a fan of the genre, you'll certainly be no stranger to this sort of thing, so dive on in and I'm sure you'll have a blast designing some beautiful (or just plain weird) hotel rooms!

My original review is below for posterity.

TL;DR If you buy this, you will essentially be paying to beta test this game. It is fun but not in a release-worthy state.

I'm going to start by saying that this is undeniably FUN. It's a classic concept, with some great ideas behind it. Sadly, this execution is seriously lacking. This game should not have been released in this state. I can hardly believe there was any/sufficient playtesting for it to have been released with so many glaring issues. A shame for what appears to be a promising title from a promising studio.

It's currently littered with bugs and graphical issues. The framerate drops in the first scene of the campaign, seemingly on all builds. A game of this nature should not be chomping on mid- to high-range GPUs. And there are so many bugs with the item selection/placement and wall/floor designing that it's not even worth going through them (although I will say that 'black' paint clearly being white is a hilarious bug).

I really, really hope that this will be improved with time. The devs are responsive, both on Steam forums and on their Discord. It would appear that fixes are being investigated for all issues being reported to them. I hope I will be able to revise my review further down the line.

For now, save your money. Time will tell whether this is worth a purchase.

My personal nomination for the 2022 "Sit Back and Relax" Award.

It's a little like opening a 10,000-piece puzzle box and finding out that not only is the picture on the front only a 'serving suggestion', but the pieces inside are all randomised.

Truly fantastic little world-building puzzle strategy that's less of a 'game' and more of an 'experience'. You don't win this by reaching a goal, you win by sitting back and getting lost in the relaxing tile placement for a few more hours than you'd planned.

Perfect on its own or alongside another activity, like watching a stream or a show. Plays pretty well on the Deck with emulated mouse control.

Micromanagement hell presented as a base-building tycoon sim.

If you enjoy repetitive puzzler games, you may actually enjoy this. It's hectic and difficult to perfect, which I appreciate is appealing to some. But a tycoon sim it is not. The game presents you with a square plot of land to build on, supposedly across four levels of depth. This is nothing but an illusion, however, as floors cannot be built above or below each other. The unlock system is a threat rather than an aid, as unlocking better objects spurs your arrogant passengers to audaciously demand fancier plants and benches. Artificial progression for the sake of a false sense of accomplishment is just a frustration rather that a genuinely useful base-building mechanic. Staff are pretty useless on their own, with such a narrow area covered by each staff member and a ludicrous diversity of tasks to keep them occupied that you will find yourself manually directing them in order to save time.

I wish this had a genuine tycoon mode free from the harsh demands of staff/customers, with the time and resources to enjoy designing and building an attractive station - but the perfectionism required to balance every need makes this a puzzle clicker full of micromanagement hell.

If you take anything away from this review: know that HUMANKIND is my Game of the Year 2021.

This is 4X in a way we have never seen before. Not a departure from the genre, but a clever reinvention that sees some long-standing mechanics (cough, cough, Civilization series) redesigned or replaced. Out of the box, this plays so much better than any other contenders in the genre, without needing to worry about mods or tweaking settings.

If you're a fan of the Civ series but can appreciate that it has flaws, you will likely adore this game as I did. If you're a hardcore fan of Civ, perhaps not. That being said, keep an open mind and approach this as a different experience and I think you will grow to love it.

Combat feels exciting and tactical, with terrain posing a tremendous obstacle or a convenient advantage depending on how it is approached. Territory expansion feels organic and significant thanks to the new pre-defined territory areas - do you try to lock down that valuable resource, or go for a handy chokepoint in between two mountain ranges? Every decision feels like it has a greater impact, as you consider whether it is worth the strain on your economy, your influence, or the local or global climate.

Now, to be clear, it is not perfect. Bugs, while increasingly rare, continue to occur. Gameplay is not always intuitive or logical. However, the devs are demonstrably working hard on resolving both technical and gameplay issues via the games2gether forums. Regular updates see bugs fixed, mechanics tweaked, units rebalanced, and even additional features being added or expanded upon.

Give HUMANKIND a try - I don't think you'll be disappointed!
