After playing 'Mordheim: City of the Damned' it was a no-brainer to dig into this tactical Warhammer 40K setting.

Story mode: I've played first the Story with 15 episodes, some nice story elements (written by author Andy Chambers), voice-acting with ardour and a good tutorial-that-lets-you-play. As stated in the other comments the AI is a weakness but I could overlook this in this mode as it's not as bad a Mordheim, IMHO. I like the graphics and the designers have put their soul into this one.

Edit 30/10 - Operations mode: Starting off this mode (a replayable loop of mini campaigns) was a chore at the start in so much that you finished the Story mode with lots of abilities and murder-weapons yet the feeling is one of attacking the other gangs with comfy cushions. As you progress you quickly learn the tactic of stealing the other gangs weapons to upgrade your own and generally watch the AI always take the objectives as priority over basic survival instincts. I'll say again, the AI is better than Mordheim but the battle scenarios are also more complex so you watch the enemy just run past you to pick up the objective only to get singularly slaughtered by your team. I 'completed' the hardest Ops. mode and can say that I enjoyed the romp.

Recommended for 40K freaks, who enjoy the setting.

Great game to pick up on a sale for those of you that love XCom. It's more simplistic yet I enjoyed more the synergies and unit specialisations on Gears Tactics. Gimmie those Scout Grenadiers!
The campaign is ok, the characterisations basic, but the voice overs are professional. The presentation and graphics are also excellent. The random missions do get samey, so mix up your units on these missions to make them more interesting... Hmm, take two Heavies on this one? This is especially true on post campaign (veteran) missions.

Release the 'Mech' in you, without the 'Meh'...

There is some excellent 40K 'mouthfeel' with Mechanicus due to the game's atmosphere and background story (author Ben Counter). The 'mechanics' of Mechanicus eventually breaks as the player learns how to work the systems, but it's an enjoyable learning curve along the way.
