The GOTY edition of Fallout 3 is pretty able in terms of coming back to it and playing it. Despite what the store page says, this game will run just fine on newer computers as far as I know, but can pretty much be tweaked if you really are starving for performance. I will say however it shows its age pretty clearly due to the old Gamebryo build used to make it, but it's far from unplayable. There simply just isn't much weight to your movements and actions, so it feels awkward at first. But you can get a really good feel for it after a while.

Another good free to play model that doesn't hammer you for money. It might feel grindy, but they added more random case drops (which doesn't require any keys!), and the game in general feels really solid. Good game. Needs more optimizations however.

Hard to believe that a game like this could suddenly exist this year and be really, really good. Of course it is, as there's lots of communities supporting it, but this season is more interesting (as of December of 2015). Because I'm playing it just now, I was introduced to new holiday items and a hockey gametype to play, and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥'s really nice! Probably won't last on the playlists after winter is over, but hopefully you can simply play it anytime.

Early Access -arvostelu
[Note: Originally a recommended review. Updates below.]

Early Access Reviews are very hard to make when you don't know what the final product will be. It's a good thing that Starbound is one of those titles that at this point, are shooting straight upwards to 1.0 release. I can probably make my say as to where it's at now (as with the combat update), and what it'll become on release (which at the time, still needs a revamped quest system and the like).

So it's definitely getting better now that we really are getting all these changes that improve the play, and things that hampered it in the beginning are starting to vanish. However, enough elements on the screen at once, Starbound will feel slow, and this may be one damning reason why it really needs some optimization before coming out. Because of the way Starbound uses assets, nothing is pre-processed, and this can really deteriorate how the game operates.
On the bright side, it makes Starbound easier to mod, to the point you could use a free program that does alpha channel PNGs (Paint.NET), and notepad. Also with JSON formatting for dead simple programming of objects, you can even take old mods and update the darn things yourself.

I'd like to see some Workshop for Starbound as well. I mean it's just one folder, right? Get the people going with the mod scene, and if it's not easily implemented, that's fine, but community content will keep it thriving, and that's definitely one thing I want to see now, and further on in development.

But besides all that, where's the meat? Exploration, mostly? You'll never find that perfect planet, because I still can't find time to build myself a nice hut in the middle of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nowhere, all because my ship may be a little... TOO useful? I don't know. You do run out of space fast in that tin can, but upgrades make it so you don't. But dungeons are rad, bosses are pretty cool, and if you break the game, it'll tip it's hat and close itself FOR you, so what's not to love?

TL;DR - I recommend this game on the principle of "IT GETS BETTER!" - and it does. It has. It can. It will. Cheers.

[NOV 2017 UPDATE]

So. Golly. The game is done, I feel kind of accomplished. Does everything I say hold up? I'm not very sure. I actually kind of hate everything I said because I was kind of dumb back then. Starbound definitely got the "it gets better" that I was talking about, but very incrementally. After 1.0 all bets were off. Starbound was a complete experience for the time. And it was good. Despite some of its major flaws, it's still great to waste time with. You go at your own pace. I guess that matters to me a lot to be perfectly honest.

So yeah. Play Starbound. It might fit you. I can't say. You'd have to give it a shot.

[SEPT 2019 UPDATE]

... Jesus Christ.

Let's just take a minute here to say that I loved this game. I loved the work everyone had put into this, and it's gotten me to sharpen my own talents as a result. I originally wanted to make a race mod for the game that I started back in mid-2017. I thought because Starbound had moderate success and yet bursting at the seams with potential that it was worth playing that I would make it one of my favourite games of all time.

Tiy is a hypocrite if he thinks all this review bombing means people care about his company and his creation. People are *pissed*. You have several artists and developers (as of this addendum, an unknown number) who Chucklefish writes off as volunteers just, absolutely discounted and left uncompensated for.

So what now, I keep asking myself? I do continue to play the game despite the audacity Chucklefish had? Do I just scrap all of my work now that I no longer feel comfortable being associated with Starbound? Well I'll say this. Go support some of the people who worked on this directly. Let Tiy know that he's a jackass and he should apologise for his actions not only as the "game designer" he is, but as the CEO of Chucklefish.

Let's hope next time I have to edit this review, things will be different.

[2022 Update]

Despite everything said, I still love Starbound. I was badly tempered at the time, and have actually gone out of the way to make changes to the above as, I didn't feel comfortable with the current state of my ongoing review. To be clear, I was not swayed to change my opinion by any means. I still think Starbound has issues that will probably never get addressed because the game in its current state is stuck in port hell until the Xbox version is out. I don't really have any ill-will to CF anymore as they're spread thin, and rely on a lot of contributors even still, but I think they're less exploitive about it. I can't say for sure. Just be aware of the history, even if it isn't an ongoing factor.

[Nov 2015 - Originally a YES recommendation]

Alrighty, time to pull on my trousers and give this game an actual review. Seems like anybody who had uneasy hopes for this game played too much New Vegas and how much of a ride that one was.

To start, yes, it's very different. Too different. In fact Bethesda went as far as making the game play a lot like Skyrim with guns.
No more armor and weapon conditions, no more vast amount of skills you need to improve on TOP of your base stats (that being SPECIAL), and karma is a thing of the past entirely. So no longer are you begging for scraps, being forably aligned to a certain alignment, using any and every broken weapon you can until you can get some better britches, and somehow the game still wants you to know that it's Fallout.

Alright, so what's the deal now? You start the game and are immediately given your E3 promises on a silver tarnished platter; You have the dog, the power armor, the buildable settlements thing, custom tuned weapons, and... Well anything else E3 already showered us in terms of fun little additions, including the phone app, that actually functions quite well given the circumstances.

It was not a very keen launch. The game came out with unfavorable issues such as the game crashing due to xAudio, but beyond that (thanks to a beta patch), the game ran perfectly fine, and looked quite nice on Medium settings.

I will say that if this game doesn't come out with Workshop and/or the Creation Kit soon, Fallout 4 might suffer a case of "this wasn't what I wanted" syndrome.
The voice acting is not gratingly horrible. Those things on your computer that resemble humans are at least human looking. The player character (as far as I know for the male voice) is alright. Level headed and blank a slate as can be to project your Mad Max fetish onto.

Why do I still recommend this game? It's still Fallout. We still have all the atomosphere to take in. When you're by yourself, the game really tries it's hardest to pump ambience into your ears and eyes, setting the tone for a cold, dead world. Combat is deliciously bloody and violent as it should. VATS makes more sense now that it's not a fixed strategic battle screen where you have all the time in the world to think about how to kill a thing. Radiation is no longer just a number that counts to 1000 before you keel over and actually affects your (total) health.
I'm not saying these changes are perfect. You can probably get a more hardcore experience cranking the difficulty to what's called "Survival".

So was this game worth dropping a ton of cash on? Ah, no. Not yet at least. I wouldn't even dare get the DLC season pass yet either until an actual DLC is announced. It's a game for the fans. It's a game for those who liked Skyrim much to how Fallout 3 attracted the likes of Oblivion fans. It's a game that was definitely designed to hallmark a time in this generation where visuals still want to be a dominant feature and hell knows, this might be the first time Fallout has actually had shiny graphics.

[August 2017 Holy S*** it's GOTY??? Update]

Well. What a tide turner. I don't think my review from 2 years ago really holds up but I'll keep it appended because I feel this needs to be kept as a reminder that opinions CAN change. Game of the Year means nothing anymore. Recieving awards for basically nothing *mean nothing*. And the fact that while the base game has reduced in price but the DLC still costs about as much as a full title? No. No, don't do this. Soon there will be a steam page for Fallout 4 GOTY Edition, and all I can say is that if you're still holding out for this game, go GET the GOTY Edition and never look back.

Do I think it's worth the "GOTY" stamp? Oh no, god, no, no. 300 hours means nothing now when I haven't properly played it in months and I haven't felt nearly inspired to play again. But it IS going to be a all-included-with-DLC hootenanny that you can play for a modest... US$40? Fee. So don't treat it like it won a ton of awards for being good. YES, play Fallout 4. Its got good gameplay and that's where it was mainly focused. DON'T buy this version of the game since it's basically more than the Game of the Year. NO, for those who already bought, don't assume GOTY will include more content because you're not going to get anything more than maybe patch notes at best. At worst, f*** all.

Great. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Game feel.

Got what I'm looking for in quote, "Steam's only Pool game". While the physics model was spot on and such, I really wasn't worrying about that so much. I just... Played it. It felt great! The AI doesn't exactly feel like they're bringing their absolute A-game, especially with the higher stage opponents. Maybe I configured it wrong. I didn't actually need to configure the game honestly, which, while welcoming, kind of makes me wonder if I should have.

At the time of purchase this game was just $1. Would it be worth the full price? Yes. There's quite a bit of game, so the price was already justified, but there's also quite a bit of challenge that you're probably gonna want to slog back to. The game comes with online, workshop, and some extra challenges.

Sadly, not many people I know own this game. IF you do buy, suggestion is that you get a copy for your good mate and maybe shoot some over a Skype call or whatever.

Furthermore, you can screw around with a table by yourself. That's rad.

A shining example of what the Unity engine can do, modding is pretty much required to get an even richer experience, but it's simple enough to do that probably wouldn't require too much fiddling on your behalf.
However I still thing this needs some work. The UI is great by itself, but it needs more readouts to make building and flying less of a game of guesswork. Kerbal Engineer can take care of that easily, but I suppose you can live without it as well. (I have.)

When I was 8, this was my Gradius. My R-Type.
Back then, I think it either ran on Flash or Shockwave, but regardless, this quirky lil shmup was hard and fun to replay.

Personally I'd play this with a keyboard since it just sort of works with that, but I doubt you'd have a hard time playing on a joystick, or even an arcade stick.

A modder's paradise and hell all in one package. And trust me, you're gonna want to be modding this game as soon as possible.

It hasn't aged particularly like I imagined it would. While at the time it was probably the most power-demanding game on the market (2004) it certainly doesn't feel like that today.
Let's set all compliments aside for a moment because you've most likely played Half-Life 2 already and are just reading this because you found it floating around somewhere.

There are still lighting issues in some parts of the game, one experience I had coming from entering Black Mesa East, Ravenholm, and exiting Ravenholm. This is caused by turning HDR off (because it's literally the most blinding feature they added in) which somehow caused mat_fullbright to enable. You *may* need to keep HDR on, even if you don't like it or god forbid your computer can't handle it. These issues also didn't seem to be fixed simply by putting in "mat_fullbright 0" either.

You will need to turn HDR on if you want to turn fullbright off. I'm not really sure if this is a huge issue, but it certainly ruins the experience if you did turn HDR off.

Meanwhile the game operates just like it did years ago. No complaints there. There may have been a few tweaks here and there to make the physics more solid (because Source is still Source and you're still gonna run into spasms), but I still saw a couple of problems with actual mis-placement of set-pieces that remain to this day. One example would be certain lamp models that would be typically placed on the ceiling aren't visually attached, which yes, looks awkward, but it's hard to nit-pick a game people (including myself) love so much.

This game is a decade old now.
