SE4 is a definite buy, it is one of the best sniper games there are. While it offers larger more detailed maps than SE3, there are several areas where it is not as polished, mainly somewhat dumbed down AI and less availability of sound masking sources.

Pros
  • Outdoors levels are huge, beautiful and varied. Gorgeous Mediterranean seasides to huge mountain levels are amazing and fun to explore with lots of little surprises and quirks to discover.
  • Open world style progress, complete objectives however you like, not in one set linear path. You can choose long distance sniping or up close and personal melee and/or assault gun fighting.
  • AI is pretty good. Make too much noise within 0-50 meters and the AI will track you down and flush you out. AI behavior and placement can vary each time you play a mission.
  • Good range of difficulty levels customization.
  • Bullet cam never gets old. Choosing the best sniping spot, observing your targets squads movements, choosing the best time to time your fire with available sound cover, gets paid off with the bullet cam showing your shell spraying the Nazi's brains out.
  • Scoping an enemy with your binoculars now gives you information like their rank, what they are carrying and even some personal information.
  • Lots of side achievements add replay-ability.
  • The 2nd best sniper game for PC (Sniper Elite 3 is more polished)
  • Excellent sound environments, lots of sound cues for stealth status, limited amount, but good music.
Cons
  • Dumbed down AI, if you are more than 50 meters from them, on most occasions they will not hunt you down if you reveal your presence by sooting without sound cover, they just extend their usual patrol paths by maybe 10 meters for a time.
  • Generators are not reliable sound mask sources. Either by design or bugged, they have around a 50% chance of working. (They always worked in Sniper Elite 3)
  • While shooting controls are fine, melee and close quarters silenced pistol controls offer clunky control.
These were less awkward in SE3.
  • No way to name save files, they are assigned a time stamp as their title. The time stamp is for your real life time, not in game mission progress time, which makes it almost impossible to find you place if you want to backtrack somewhat.
  • While it is helpful to turn up the volume to take advantage of sound cues (enemy footsteps etc.) your sniper shots will be like firing a canon next to your ear. Really needs to allow the player to turn down gun fire sound while keeping environment sounds up.
