Dota 2 isn't just a game you pick up and play until you eventually toss it aside after you are done. It's a life-long obsession. With over 100 heroes and items which are all constantly changing over time, no two games you play will ever be the same. Dota 2 has a lot of depth and it takes a lot of effort to understand its complexities. However, once you overcome the steep learning curve, you can truly appreciate the game. You will never truly master it as the game changes drastically every meta but I think it is that challenge that keeps people playing despite them whining and crying about the game.

Much like the sports most people get obessed over such as football and tennis, there is a lot of history to this game. The e-sports scene is very spectacular that it is worth watching even if you aren't even looking to improve your own gameplay.

As for the community, it is inevitable that you will encounter miscreants much like in real life. The negative experiences probably stand out more due to the fact that you have to endure playing with people for 30-40 minutes. You have to get into the right mentality to enjoy this game, else you will end up being a raging buffoon yourself. Just realize that you cannot win every game but try to improve from every game.
