Howdy to both Devs and gamers who might take the time to read this! I'm really enjoying Sulfur and think it's EASILY worth the price tag, but I had a few notes I'd like to share about what I'd personally do with the game if I was in the drivers seat, before 1.0 release comes out. So, take these notes with a grain of salt, and don't look at them as a GRR DO THIS OR ELSE, more of a suggestion box I'm stuffing full by myself.

-Explosion Augment should destroy breakable walls, period.

-Using a caliber kit should change recoil DRASTICALLY. My Corpsemaker shouldn't have the same recoil from 5.56 to 50cal or 12g, shot to shot.

-50 cal ammo shouldn't be 6 per box, make it 15 or something reasonable PLEASE

-Thank you for letting me repair multiple gear pieces at once, but I feel that a "REPAIR ALL" button with a price on it would be a much faster, easier, better addition.

-Let people use barrels with silencers, if they install a barrel first. You can limit which ones, like making not-all-silencers work with the 6" barrel. I feel the downside on Speed is already not worth using most barrels that aren't 6 inch and the decision to take -10% speed for 0.25 spread extra and NO sound suppression is NUTS.

-Have some more extreme effects on oils. You can get weird with it. No one is taking -40% recoil and -25% movespeed when you have a -25% recoil oil or whatever already. A lot of them feel almost entirely useless right now, but I feel this could be fixed with DRASTIC upswings to both negative and positive effects. It would make some oils only situationally useless rather than completely useless. It would be really fun to see some ♥♥♥♥ like "+100% damage, -100% recoil, -50% spread while in water" or "+50 damage for 3 seconds after breaking an object". I'd love to see some really weird oils that make me fundamentally change how I play. Bullet bounces feel weak right now. WALK EASY OIL AND REGULAR RECYCLE OIL SHOULDN'T JUST HAVE THE SAME -15% WHEN ONE HAS A DOWNSIDE!!

-I'd love to see some items like a Personal Cooker that lets you cook in a 2x2 from inventory and takes up 2x2 slots. Or some armor that gives you extra inventory space. Or some armor that gives "immunity to effects" instead of just resistance to their typing?

-Change the EXP system; knowing you can get a weapon to 5 right now just running Caves over and over is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boring (and yes I know I do it to myself, but come on). Caves should stop giving EXP at Level 2-3. Town should stop at 4-5, etc. Make the upper limit on leveling higher (7 levels??), but make higher-area enemies give more EXP (they might already but it feels so negligible that grinding Caves is just -the way to go-)

-MAKE IT SO WE CAN SKIP SEEING THE WISE OLD WOMAN (WITCH) IN CAVES EVERY TIME WE CHARGE AMULET. I cannot ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stand having to do "the sequence" every time I charge amulet in Caves it is SO ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ TEDIOUS AND BORING.

-Explain what weapons can have mods better, without having to have the mod and the weapon both in Inventory. It's incredibly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lame to know my Energy weapon can't equip a barrel mod AFTER I've bought the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mod and the weapon.

-If you want inventory size to matter, you should add something like the Resourceful Rat from Enter the Gungeon.

-Make crafting recipes save to memory. Crafting the same recipe again should tell you what you're crafting. Add a (???) outcome on crafting if you've not crafted an item before.

-ADD AT-A-GLANCE SELL VALUES TO ITEMS. I don't care if you have to leave out Charisma calculations or whatnot, I should always know generally what my items will sell to a vendor for

-Give us better information! How much damage does Poison do, and for how long? How much extra damage do frozen enemies take? How much damage does explosion do? What is the multiplier on a crit? What happens if we go over 100% crit? What are the odds on Rooting an enemy? I didn't understand the gibbing/organ looting mechanic for 20 hours of playing without looking it up first!

-Fix some old bugs and visual bugs; being under the water in certain rooms in Caves causes the floor-under-water texture to bug out. The room before Miniboss in Caves always has an enemy clipped inside of a wall, every single time. Having extra jump height in water can cause you to FLING up into the air sometimes, and other times can clip you inside of walls. Using Poison gum while being poisoned causes the poison to extend to the duration of the gum for some reason??

-If you don't want to put any of this IN the game, update the Wiki for your players. It gets too extreme trying to parse out all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ myself.

I'll try to edit this review should any of this get added, but the game is an easy recommendation for me at the moment!

Edit 1: I hope the framerate issues in Dungeon and Town get sorted out :c IT WAS!

Edit 2: Ok, Green-buff enemies that spawn another enemy on death need to chill and stop putting dudes under the floor who can shoot out of the floor at you

Tentative "No" on the recommendation only purely because this game is still in Early Access and I can't justify telling people to spend $10 for a 7 hour video game when there are SO MANY good indie titles out there.

I know when this game is more fleshed out with content, controller support, bug fixes, balancing patches, and so on and so on that it will be AMAZING, but at the present (11/23/24 - 1.0.0b)

I will be keeping up with this game's development and updating my review, but AS IT EXISTS TODAY, it's a hesitant no.

I love the music, the artstyle, the gameplay, game feel, and overall everything about this game and I wish nothing more than for it to be successful so the developer, Kiseff, can continue to put in amazing work on it!!

Edit 12/07/2024: Some commenters are viewing this game really subjectively (WOW, M-MOMMY THIGHS furry mentality), and then are getting offended at an objective review. If your comments (such as "keep whining") are intended to make me change my review to a positive one, that's a bit cult-y, and you should take a step back and look at this more analytically.

I think people don't know what the point of Early Access is. There is nothing wrong with pointing out the CURRENT STATE of the game with a negative review and I've said before this review will go Positive... once the content is up to par with the price.

As an aside, I picked up Elin for $20 and I expect to get 100 hours at least out of it right now. It's also Early Access, but feels more "feature complete". The point of a negative review is to send the developer feedback.

The 7 hours it took me to beat this game -in singleplayer- (which I hear is harder) and could easily be shortened down to 5 hours, as I found secrets on my own and did a lot of build-restructuring and math on some damage calculations while having the game open. If you want to sit here and argue that missing features, missing content, etc are all irrelevant, then your opinions are worth less than slime drops to me.

Mald all you want in the comments, there just isn't that much to do in this product, as it exists today, for your money. Go goon to some artwork if you're that hard-up for this game. I love the creator, Kiseff, and I love their art, and I think this is an awesome passion project, but for the money as a product that is designed to compete with the indie gamespace at large, it just isn't the bang for your buck I expect.

Garbage game that feels worse than Warframe in every way imaginable.
Hell, it feels worse than Remnant 1.

>Friends who co-op with you don't get real progress they can use, and have to repeat the progress on their own worlds
>Scrap/random drop economy is awful
>Difficulty is either too easy, or too boring and bullet-sponge-y on higher difficulties
>Requires linking your Epic account for Crossplay
>DLC is extremely highly-priced despite the game having been out for a year
>Learned nothing from Elden Ring which came out a year prior

After 15 hours I really just think Sunless Seas had a better game-flow and narrative flow to things.

This game is cool but it seems like inferior storytelling and vibes mixed with slightly-better combat?

The progression just seems MUCH slower than Seas and I'm not sure why 15 hours in I still feel like I just started the game when at a similar point in Seas I'd be feeling like Ahab, dying only to my own hubris over the biggest fish in the pond.

Metal Gear Survive with all the same crafting BS, none of the stealth mechanics, and they swapped out your PMC's for Legally Distinguishable Pokemon. Well done!
