Great work. But. Be warned, early access!

After long years of waiting Dwarf Fortress has hit Steam. The graphics and mouse interactions made this game so much more accessible to a new player, otherwise, I highly doubt that I could find my wife sitting in front of this game for hours, sharing the fun I experienced in the classical version of the game. Thank you Kitfox for bringing a fantastic game to a broader audience.

The graphics and music are superb. The original dwarf vibe was well-preserved with a modernized arcade art style. I can see that the UI/UX has been completely reworked. The mouse interaction, once you get the hang of it, is pretty straightforward. It adds more interactiveness to the keyboard experience of the classic version. I especially like the uniform rectangular swipe for all the region-related operations. Much less confusing than the original where two kinds of modes exist.

Now, the drawback. I have to say that this game really should have been labeled early access.

There are bugs. The game sometimes hangs when one wants to name a save file. Sometimes there is quite some lag after the game autosaves during season change (on my Linux machine).

Some quality-of-life functionalities are still missing.

• The in-game hints are far from comprehensive. A player will constantly refer to the wiki to get the not-so-obvious information.
  
• The item sort order is... confusing. I can hardly make logic out of it... Well, the classic version doesn't have the sort and filter but there was dfhack.
  
• I can't find the full announcement report. It's not often checked during normal play but when things happen, the reports will come in handy.
  
• I can't find the pause on migrants/megabeasts etc options.

Someone mentioned adventure mode in other reviews. It will come, one day. Right?

Overall, nice work from Kitfox. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in similar sim games and tell them to be careful because this game is in fact in early access. I would also look forward to UI/UX updates in the future.
