fun but with jank controls, wish they let you swap which side you're shooting from easily instead of it auto aiming for you

the base game may have been a real stinker, but this isn't.
only thing i'll say is that you really shouldn't pick the skip intro option, the weapons and specialisations they give you if you do skip are god awful, especially if you choose to play on very hard like i did.
go from the start, rush the main story and do a couple of side missions until the dlc introduces itself. Don't trust the feds.

the best way i can describe this game is that it's less of a strategy game and more of a story generator; if you're going into this expecting high impact gameplay then you're going to be sorely disappointed when you get faced with paragraphs of text to read, because that's the game and the fun stems from there.
if you're one of the freaks who enjoyed pyre or read stellaris anomalies descriptions, you'll love this game.

what you read is entirely influenced by the choices you make during the game; say if one of the galaxies species decides to start making all of their machinery out of clockwork, then that will change the terminology they use to refer to their technology. instead of computers for example it would be a clockwork calculator.
this little bit of continuity makes the stories this game creates a lot more believable and a bit more unique with each playthrough (for reference, 1 playthrough is about 2-4 hours)

however, there is something to make very clear here - you can't really choose the societies you raise/play in this game;
  • their portraits are semi-random and their names are fixed to said portraits, names as in empire/society name and species name.
  • you can't choose which star to colonise or when you can as you rather have to wait for the game to provide that opportunity for you, because of the small size of the galaxy, this will absolutely collide with another species' planet and i have yet to see a successful cohabitation happen between two species.
  • if you want to influence their development then you'll need to be ready for any cost; it is basically guaranteed that your beloved planet of scorpions will try to start a planetary war that wipes out 95% of the population, and you're the guy who has to hoard 30-60 synthesis points to prevent this from happening. +2 for realism.

to give an example of this games storytelling; i chose to populate earth with dinosaurs and they had experienced three near extinction events in their lifetimes. they were as followed;
  1. the society decided to mine all of the gold on the planet, resulting in a massive resource shortage that caused the dinosaurs to revert from the iron age to the stone age. only mushroom shamans survived somehow.
  2. a meteor then decided to strike earth, because i lacked the synthesis points to prevent this second catastrophe i had to take a near extinction card again - the mushroom shamans, again, survived.
  3. third time was the charm and this society managed to survive for long enough to make it into the industrial age, where they proceeded to invent alcohol, became alcoholics, and got raided by a colony ship from an empire on the other side of the galaxy. the mushroom shamans did survive once more, but only because that colony ship was going through resource shortages and decided to collectively off themselves during their war against drunken, primitive reptiles.

it's a wild ride and i can't wait for them to finish this game.

there's a point where you make a game so intentionally bad that it becomes just bad.
controls are rancid, weapons feel sloppy, performance is down the drain, and bugs are swarming.

even when its free this game is not worth it.

as is stellaris and paradox games tradition - overpriced but basically required to play the game.
grab on a sale before they jack up the price again.

the vassal mechanics are *alright*, but there is a massive lean towards rushing vassalisation in both player expectations and ai choices. so if you're a war-like player, prepare to check the empire you're fighting to tell if they're a vassal or overlord; if you're a peaceful or tall empire player, prepare to be the one subjugating the galaxy for those vassal bonuses.

hyper relays are amazing and a welcome addition, orbital rings are a cool concept but not insanely useful outside of niche builds. quantum catapults are incredibly niche due to their requirements and drawbacks - most of the time just building a gateway to abuse would be better.

new origins are fun, moreso if you're the kind of player who keeps creating empires, starting a new game, reaching year 2350, and stopping. though i'm still not sure what the shroudwalker enclave is meant to do or provide beyond a worldbuilding piece.
