Can confirm its now working on Steam Deck out of the box. However the menu launched in Japanese so i went to the option to the right and selected english
If you plan to cap the framerate below 60 to save power, go for instant text since the text animations dont like the decks limiter
I recommend making the right trackpad act as mouse. Another good Famicom DC-like

"In my restless dreams I see that framerate graph. Stuttering all over. You promised me the game would run well someday"
This review will change to positive when the game is optimized well enough to avoid stutters on powerful hardware, fixes the animation glitches and enhances scalability for lower end devices like the Deck. Come on. You made a great game, dont let tech issues ruin it.

The hardest part, making a great game is done, but the technical situation is pretty rough, and not helped at all by users who refuse to consider the technical aspect of a game in their reviews or are just not sensitive to stuttering or performance issues.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1Et12RgWlQ

The DF video is a good starting point
There seem to be separate problems
*Traversal sutter:
(because of asset streaming presumably) THIS CANNOT BE AVOIDED LITERALLY NO MATTER YOUR PC. The video demos a 4090+7800x3D. Please stop deluding yourselves saying it works fine for you. You are not sensitive to stuttering, AND CANNOT TELL. Good for you.
* Character animation stutter:
Digital Foundry diagnosed it as a deltatime issue that for the moment can only seem to be fixed by using tickrate+outside framerate cap :(
* Out of control memory usage:
It gets so bad that on Steam Deck they had to lock every upscaler but TSR or the game start eating over 16gb of shared memory at lowest setting in sub 800p rendering
*Insufficient base optimization:
The graphics are fine but they do not justify this performance!
*Bad use of upscalers and denoisers:
The UE denoiser makes some surfaces have a boiling effect. This has been fixed by modders
Trailing and ghosting on moving objects like leaves
The game is also using the incorrect version of DLSS

A fantastic remake of Warren Spector's Licensed Mouse Classic.
It has a lot of fun little details and introduces player freedom and choice and consequence to young players so that they might grow up expecting more reactivity and complexity from their games. By no means it has the depths of Spectors other works but it's pretty reactive for a kid's licensed game.
More enjoyable than ever with updated controls, fantastic optimization and perfect Steam Deck Support.
Only complaint is they didnt add voice-acting beyond the opening movie.

A definitive version of a classic so ahead of its time some of it still feels modern despite some jank.
It's weird that it seems to include new content from a supposed sequel that will likely never be made since Ansel and the Ubi of old are gone and we've been teased for TWO DECADES now.
It also includes an Anniversary Gallery thats like an interactive documentary for the game. Great stuff.

The bad: a 20 year old game requires Ubisoft Connect, which is a piece of garbage like all tacked on publisher launchers. Steam is all we want and need, thank you very much
They also added achievements way later after I already finished the game. Thanks, Ubi

There's a potentially decent game here dying from a lack of oxygen beneath terribly asinine decisions and a badly optimized PC port.

First things first: These graphics are fine but THEY DO NOT JUSTIFY THIS PERFORMANCE. Despite the games massive filesizes, I regularly see subpar texture work and there is no Raytracing. At highest settings the game is pretty but nothing revolutionary. As such, there is NO REASON for it to be this taxing.
I'm seeing a 7800X3D and a 4080 being brought to their knees (with fast ram to spare and running from an NVME drive) to sometimes sub 60 fps at 1440p ultra. On a game with NO RAYTRACING. What the heck, Square.

Second: The game has three pillars for my money. Story, combat and spectacle. And so far only the third is holding its weight

The plot so far is engaging enough (it's no FF 6 or 9) but in keeping with the tradition of 15, it's hampered to hell and forth by dismal pacing. At least they didnt chop bits off of it and put them in media outside the game this time.
However the story wastes its opening on a battle we will see in better context later, then jumps to what should have been the intro, diverts from it to introduce antagonists and their politics, then jumps back in time, then forth again, then into a super implausible double childhood reunion Dickensian coincidence...
Look, I get it. You have to deliver a lot of exposition to set the stage but frankly you fumbled harded than Skyrim. The game makes you think the tutorial is finally over after the Title Drop but HOURS after that you are STILL on a short linear leash basically setting the stage for the story to FINALLY START. I think ive finally hit the point where the game proper begins, AND IVE BEEN PLAYING FOR 10 HOURS!!!
Sidenote: I really like the Acitve Time Lore and how much effort when into editing it for almost every line during a cutscene. The in game wikia is also cool since it uses several to the point articles and invites you to pile on Tabs from the "See More" section, much like a real life Wiki dive you get lost in.

Next problems, however:
The combat. It seems to be based on Forspoken's system of collecting sets of powers to spam in real time as you swap sets you acquire from big bosses.
However it inherits Forspoken's problem of making the combat feel super dull until you get the first boss' power set, and introduces new ones.
Unlike Forspoken, your character isnt nimble at all. You are slow as ♥♥♥♥.
You have a magic dash but IT GIVES NO IFRAMES AND CANT BE USED FOR DODGING.
You dodge with a crappy slow sidestep. You cant even roll.
Parrying is a joke. It has no dedicated button, you have to line you animation with an enemies and hope the planets magically aligned to give you one. You cant block either. Since the game assumes powers spamming will be constant almost every enemy is either a push over or has too much health. The combat does get more fun when you become powerful enough to overcome the spongy nature of enemies. But you will mostly be mashing and stunlocking with the occational dodge or jump-to-dodge. There's barely any build variety and your full set of actions is so limited its all about waiting for the powers to charge to spam.
Im playing in Action Mode by the way. I wanted to give the combat a chance on its terms. Its mediocre

Nuiscances pile up with UX and the overworld, thousand papercuts style:
YOU ARE SO. EFFIN. SLOW. There is no run button. You hold a direction and after an eternity you start dashing. Your default moving speed is dismal and running doesnt help that much. You cant double jump or climb or crouch. It's one of those games where any enviromental movement interaction is predetermined and everything else is an invisible wall.
Did I mention there is no Parry button? i'm still mad at that one
The game constantly stops to show a fullscreen Title Card for every quest that starts. Just put it on the side ffs. Some cutscenes are locked to 30 fps and its really jarring when it constantly jumps framerates back and forth since only some parts of a whole sequence are considered "Detailed Cutscenes" and locked to 30.
You cant give orders to any party member except the dog, nor change their looks or gear.
The sidequests are filler garbage.
The spectacle sequences of the fights are smeared by fullscreen distortion effects when I need to mash. Just put the prompt by itself instead of flashing crap all over and let me see the animations you worked so hard on clearly

I probbaly will keep at it now that I'm past the worse, but I can't really recommend this to anyone but the already hardened J(A)RPG audience who already has the stomach for tedious intros and UX issues. 7 Remake was worlds ahead.

I give it the highest praise I can give any rerelease:
I recommend newcomers play this over the original.
Now THIS is how you blur the line between Remake and Remaster. You can quite see a few "problem" spots with outdated animations not fully cleaned up overlaid on top of a modern presentation and some clashes of light and art-style (the on rails heli intro looks off to me), but good stuff overall.
Good optimization, runs great on deck. AI and control improvements are appreciated.
My only complaint is that some areas seem to have reduced the hordes even on maximum horde in settings in comparison to the original.
I hope this can be patched but it may be a deliberate response to some players finding certain areas too crowded to the point of annoyance.

Modders bring back Eropics, plz
Capcom continues doing fantastic work on their backcatalog.
I really need to see Onimusha 3, Haunting Ground and Shadow of Rome come back. Please.

Arguably as great as the Monkey Island Special Editions, even down to the on the fly swap between new and original graphics. Even has Steam Deck support and great accesibility and QOL options!

Also some little stuff left in the cutting room floor can be added back to the game with a toggle.

Downsides however, are that as touched up as the audio is, it's still unavoidably crunchy as it was recorded way back when under severe limitations (They preserved all the original dubs so, they made the right call, in my opinion). And Nico's sequences from the Director's Cut are plain GONE.
If I understand correctly, those sequences are gone because DC was based on a weird mobile version of the game that came with some compromises? But is there no way to preserve that?
I do agree the opening is much stronger in the original, but I loved Nico's sequences and it makes me sad we still dont have a "definitive" version of the game. At least from an ALL the content perspective.
It is worth noting some of the fanbase didnt care for them at the time, and in terms of overall experience and quality, I would recommend this as the version to play if you are in doubt and never experienced the strory before.

Ah yes, we are having Classic 7th Gen hack and...
GOOD LORD WHAT IS HAPPENING IN HERE?
This is a terrible port in desperate need of patches. Like NOW
Menus suck and the graphics settings are non existant. You only get resolution. Cant even set vsync.
Dialogue fails to play randomly.
Animations are all over the place playing way faster or slower than the original, which combined with a camera that feels super heavy makes controling Juliet very off.
Volume controls do not always apply to cutscenes.
Plenty of original music is just GONE
QTES dont work
Saves can get magically erased
Audio and subs desync
The DLC Costumes are Gone
They did not properly upscale the menu and loading screen assets so they look piexlated AF
Comic Style shaders and filters are gone and so is the pastel-like colouring. It looks flatter, and more muted
Runs like GARBAGE on Steam Deck
The Steam Library Banner and Poster are super low rez, they couldnt even export a png correctly.
Repop mode is a JOKE that shouldnt even be in the game, but honestly, thats nothing if the original worked properly.
This desperately needs a couple patches. As it stands it is WORSE THAN THE ORIGINAL
40 bucks? Lol, no. I wish they just clicked Export on the Original UE3 Project and called it a day

I liked the campaign for the most part.
I wish I could leave a MEH Review.
I REALLY dont like the intrusion of multiplayer elements into the core design. The campaign feels too levely, constantly fading to black to move us to another point, breaking up short sequences by shoving us into an "Assemble" corridor or elevator to rally the co-op players. All for the benefit of the multiplayer aspect.
There's rarely any sense of true seamless progression across a mission or world. It doesnt help immersion one bit.
Even the Orbital Station that serves as your HQ feels less like a Player Base which I love seeing in games, and more like a tacked on hub for the multiplayer like the Station in Darktide.
Singleplayers will also have to deal with the fact Companion AI is dumb.

Also, the devs should remember it is possible to take what was good and fun of the 7th gen games without artificially replicating their limitations and flaws.
The world doesnt feel as alive as it should. Too many invisible walls, set dressing unintelligent npcs, that sometimes, have a couple lines of dialogue or reactivity aside from their plot participation.
And just like its predecessor, it REALLY needs an FOV slider,
Gamefeel is.. off. Titus feels weaker and less imposing though movement and combat than in the original despite the fact he should be more powerful now
I do like the SP Game mostly but these annoyances shouldnt be here.
Its sad that along with the good of games from the 7th gen era, it seems to have also taken some of their weaknesses.

A fantastic package that straddles the line between remake and remaster with abundant extras, and an official localization for a game that was previously only available through fan translations in the west.
Great work, fantastic new graphics and music (except for the Pursuit theme in AAI2 not having a Sax, come on!). I joked in my review of the previous collection that we would never get this and here it is!
Only wish it had more languages.
