(Original review: 8th Dec 2022) Well. Whilst I had a decent grasp of Dwarf Fortress in the past, some things still throw curveballs. Lots of deaths in my dwarves, so, if losing is fun, then that makes me a Funner. Somehow my fortress is clinging on...
Forget striking the earth: smite the animals. As well as Smite the other denizens that intrude on your moment of satisfaction of building a functional haven for dwarves.

(Addendum: 21st Nov 2023): This game is a labour of love from its creators, assuredly. They have thrown years of effort into the game even prior to its debut on Steam, and are likely to continue. This is arguably the grand-daddy-dwarf of all world-sims.

Factorio ( base game ) is pretty solid. However the mods extend the playability of the game significantly. Extra complexity for those who want it, at no extra cost! Worth checking out if you like logistic confusion!

'Mildly' addictive. Says me with over 1000 hours. Probably not for everyone. The first colony is likely to grind to a halt as heat begins to become a problem and you never noticed. Second colony, you know what you're facing and the challenges, but you're still not quite prepared. Third colony you're getting the hang of how to survive ... Then you start trying to figure out how to actually get rockets off the ground. Five colonies in, hours sunk into the game and a rocket scientist ... and then, you realise you can pick a different starting asteroid with different challenges. Time to check those out...

Life is complicated. But certainly worth the price. The DLC increases the complexity even further...

Addendum: Still addictive even after a lot more time played on it, but now I've done most things I wonder what's next in the works. It's still being added to, so, looking forward to what the next big thing will be...

It's a game that has potential. For the price however, consider only getting if and when it's heavily discounted. The content doesn't match the asking price. It's made well for what is there, but I'd expect more for what I paid.

Well worth taking your time playing. Good ideas in inventory management.. Downside: No Dog. Not in this game. Next one, perhaps? I can imagine not having the Knuckles controllers would be a slightly different experience, not quite as seamless. If you have a VR headset and enjoy the Half Life franchise, it's a worthy addition.

Early Access Review
The game plays slightly differently to the original halflife, but that's no bad thing. The differences mean the first playthrough would be about as long as your original playthrough, even if you know what to expect.

Xen, on the other hand, is brand new. It's also awesomely pretty. At the time of writing this, the only performance issue I encountered with a medium-high spec machine was towards the end of Interloper. Even dialing down the detail from maximum at this stage didn't resolve that. Clearly there's some performance issues they have to solve there, but that's about 3 minutes of time waiting for a door to open and nothing else happening (no action)

Performance issues aside, the Xen champters truly refresh the game and for this reason alone I'd give it a thumbs-up. Executed very well and to a good standard. If you have a hankering to play half life 1 at any time in the future, you'd do well to consider this version. It's not perfect, but it's a good buy still.

Still hard to get into but it's come a long way to what it started out as.

It has its moments, fun to start off with but it's a timesink to get everything built, upgraded. Certainly I'd suggest first-time players to use the measures to make the game as quick and easy as possible. Some minor irritations remain, but for the price in sales, and the time spent, it's worth a look if you enjoyed games like Factorio.

Innovative twists introduced by GLaDOS make each new level of this DLC something unique, as what you thought you knew about the 'rules' changes each time. Heartily recommended.

If you like logic games such as sudoku, you'll quite likely enjoy this novel take on a puzzle that involves logic, maths and numbers, and painting!

Fortunately, even though it superficially involves maths, the default setting is they provide all the possible answers for you! If you're feeling particularly masochistic however, you can turn off these hints and give yourself a serious brain-ache.

Am I addicted to this game? Nacht. But it's thoroughly absorbing for a casual game for ten or fifteen minutes whilst having a beverage of your choice, and you'll probably keep coming back for more!
