This is a great game. On the surface it is a simple game that boils gameplay down to the bare essentials -- decision making, strategy -- and turns it into a very satisfying gameplay loop. For such an inexpensive game there is a surprising amount of content and depth -- tons of items and secret characters to discover if you really try to dig in. This is one of my personal favorite games of the year and an insane value for the price. Highly recommended if you've ever wanted to know what it's like to be the bullet hell boss.

Hades is easily one of the best run based 'roguelike' games I've ever played. It has everything you'd expect from a Supergiant game: great art, tight gameplay, fantastic music and voice acting. This game is an amazing synthesis of all of their strengths.

The combination of weapons, abilities, and boons mean you have a massive variety of ways to play from run to run. The controls are tight and combat moves quickly and viscerally. What sets this apart from other roguelikes of similar strengths is the way that Hades weaves the story and character development into the very mechanics of the genre. The game's story and dialogue seemingly react to your actions and choices from run to run in a way that I have found very compelling. I find myself wanting to do more runs simply to get a chance to talk to characters and progress those relationships. It's very cool stuff.

Overall I've played about 30 hours so far and I can see myself playing for many many more. I'd highly recommend this game if you've enjoyed past games by Supergiant Games, or if you enjoy run based games like Dead Cells, Enter the Gungeon, etc.

This is a great game. It makes me feel like I'm playing a modern Diablo 2, one of my favorite games of all time. The passive skill tree is vast and detailed, and there's a massive amount of content here for a free to play game.

I do recommend looking up some build guides if you don't have the time to experiment and roll many characters since this game doesn't seem very forgiving in terms of respeccing and experimenting without rolling lots of characters. I simply don't have the time to try tons of characters these days.

Regardless this game is very addictive and it feels great tearing through huge packs of monsters and enemies.

Downwell is awesome. It has cool style, fun gameplay with interesting powerups and an addictive combo system that constantly has me wanting to play one more run. For less than a cup of coffee this game is a great value, and I'd reccomend it to anyone who enjoys arcade style platformers.

Remaster Update:

They made some smart changes to the game menus, allowing you to more quickly filter and sort your songs. This is awesome if you have a lot of DLC. The overhauled Riff Repeater is great as well. I still recommend this game -- they consistently release DLC, and the quality of life improvements make the game even better than before.

Original Review:

I've been having a blast with this game. It takes the addictive elements of guitar hero and rock band, and teaches you real guitar techniques.

There are lots of fun songs across all genres to learn, and the game does a good job of letting you ramp up until you are playing every note. It also has a cool "riff repeater" mode that lets you slow down and repeat sections of the song in order to practice. I've played about 50 hours of the game and I can actually play a few songs on my own already.

There is also has a mini game mode that turns practicing scales, chords and other drills into games, which is more fun than just practicing those things over and over.

My only complaint with this game is that it doesn't have very good tools for calibrating audio/visual input lag. I wish it had more robust tools like Rock Band does, because there's not much you can do to correct it. Overall, I'd recommend this to anyone who has had fun with Guitar Hero and wants to actually learn guitar.
