I strongly recommend against purchasing this game or supporting Capcom as a company. Capcom added a malicious DRM called Enigma Protector, which is very shady and obfuscates where the company is from, to several of their older titles, years after their initial release. This unexpected update has impacted the performance of these games, causing severe frame rate drops and making them unplayable for many. But even more concerning for me, this seems to be an attempt to prevent mods and custom content, which have been a vital part of enhancing the gaming experience for many players from custom content to actual fixes.

This decision not only shows a blatant disregard for the community but also reveals Capcom's anti-consumer practices. It’s evident that this was a deliberate attempt to control how players interact with their games. This is further confirmed by the fact that many players, including myself, have experienced issues like wiped saves, lost achievements, and UI errors on Steam pages.

By introducing this intrusive DRM, Capcom has clearly shown that they prioritize their crusade against modding over the satisfaction of their paying customers. This is unacceptable, and I urge potential players to reconsider supporting a company that treats its customers this way. Until this DRM is removed and Capcom makes amends for this anti-consumer behavior, I cannot recommend this game or any other Capcom titles that use this DRM.

no i was talking about the one after the gfwl version, which doesnt have splitscreen support.

kripcision, are you talking about the port that had GFWL? Because I'm not. The port is the same one, it's just they added a layer of an obscure DRM that has dubious sources to the same port.

We're talking about the same port, it's just that in 2024 they added a new DRM to the game, same port it's just that before April 2024, the game didn't have any DRM.

But thank you for instructions on how to install previous versions of the game.

and yet this port is better than the version they had prior. if it bothers you that much you can downgrade your copy of RE5

They added DRM to it months after I bought it.

I worded my previous comment poorly.
I mean the version that came after they retired the GFWL version didn't have DRM until 6 months ago.

@SpideyPwnsAll That's false they did update the game, to add the DRM, they didn't do anythign else with it though.

They added this DRM 6 months ago: https://steamdb.info/app/21690/history/?changeid=U:47180366

You can also confirm there's a new label on the store page that says "Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: The Enigma Protector", after they changed to the non-GFWL version, that one didn't have DRM.

Mods can be affected by this DRM, doesn't mean all of them are.

When the DRM was introduced some games were having issues:

I never came across any of this yet with the Steam version. I've modded the game, too. I don't know what you are going on about when it comes to Resident Evil 5, but Capcom hasn't touched this game in like forever honestly-- since like 2010 maybe? This Gold Edition is old as fuck and I even own this same version for Xbox 360.

I don't suggest supporting Capcom when it comes to their newer games (Resident Evil 7 & 8) for sure. Especially the terrible remakes they're doing for the originals. Now I'm extremely worried they'll butcher the first game like they've done the others... :sadMio:
