“The Sons of The Forest” disappointing yet holds potential. 6/10

As someone who loved the original “The Forest” game like many others I was excited to hear about “The Sons of The Forest” however with all the delays and missed release dates I assumed they would have been much further into development than they currently are.

At Its core “The Sons of The Forest” is solid and I enjoyed the overall game-play however It has to be said it was one of the worst cases of storytelling in a game I have experienced.

Let me start off by saying I understand the game Is In EA (early access) and I do trust Endnight Games Ltd to deliver a solid game but in its current state I would suggest waiting a few months before buying.

The positives;
> The core game is great and allows Endnight to expand on.
> The new building system although confusing at the start is vastly improved.
> Kelvin and Virginia are helpful and interesting NPCs (unless your team mate kills them)
> Season change is a cool idea.
> Multiplayer works well with very few issues.
> The graphics are beautiful and had me stopping just to look around at the landscape.
> Music from the radios is bussing for real for real on god!
> The enemy AI has been improved and does some cool stuff, however needs work.
> Developed by Endnight games, who in all honesty have dedication to make the game great.
> Good price (to my understanding this is a fixed price and won’t change)
> Oh yeah and EPIC tree physics & animations

The negatives
> The storytelling was utter piss, again I understand we have lore and story objects missing however the base principle of the story was terrible.
> Cut scenes are terrible, most them where spent going, WHAT IS GOING ON / WHO IS THIS?
> Had to watch a YouTube video after to find out what the F just happened.
> The game ends in one short cut-scene that makes absolutely no sense at all.
> No voice acting or hardly sounds in the cut-scene, my immersion ruined!
> A lot of the world just feels empty with hardly any point of interests that make you explore.
> The loot respawning nuts even in hard. You spend most of the game throwing meds and food around the place since the game hands loot non-stop and you are full.
> Traversal is boring, run from green dot to purple dot on the map.
> There are very few threats as you can easily outrun every single enemy.
> Base building although improved is totally pointless.
> You can get a gun in the first 15mins of playing.
> The game giving you ammo frequently makes most melee weapons redundant.
> The game tells you where to go with big green and purple marker over the map, defeats the point of exploring, The forest was much better in this regard.
> Most of the interesting items you only get a couple of minutes before the ending.
> No food poisoning mechanic makes the game very easy.
> Missing important content from The Forest looking at you log sledge and fire arrows.
> Ran a little poo I expected a bit more from my set up. (CPU 5600x / GPU 6650XT / 16GB Ram)
> For a survival game, surviving is very easy.

Again I understand the game is in EA (early access) but this tag slapped on it two weeks before release and the reasoning being “We feel it is now at a stage where it needs player feedback and involvement to help push this even further." Is a bit of a joke, there is so much missing or things that could be improved before even bringing players in.

I was very close to leaving this game with "not recommended" but with all the disappointment I still enjoyed the game play and had good experience, I would just suggest letting Endnight finish the game before buying.

I don’t think it will ever match the experience "The Forest" gave me and that is sad. All that being said the story is the worst part of the game and detracts so much for me and I honestly don’t see how they could improve that without rewriting it.

Happy to update review once I replayed after early access.

UNCHARTED games have always had a good and enjoyable story, the characters have great history as you would expect from the series,

However the game-play and shooting is very lacklustre and the movement just feels god awful.

That being said I still think the game is worth playing if you like your very heavily story based games.
