Early Access Review
Pretty fun game. The level designs would be better if they were more unique and abstract like they are in Kane Pixel's backrooms found footage videos, as right now they feel quite cookie-cutter and simplistic in their design and randomization patterns.

Overall a fun game so far, but I feel quite frustrated with the fact this game won't render higher than a 1080p resolution for me on my 1440p display. (Acer Nitro XV272U 1440p monitor, RTX 3080 Ti)
That resolution issue makes for a noticeably less enjoyable experience in my opinion. Everything is way too fuzzy, more than it should normally be I think.
Still a cathartic backrooms experience at the end of the day.

Game does not let you save your progress at any point. Dying permanently rolls you back to the very beginning where you have nothing. It is not a free-roam open-world space simulator in the slightest. It's just a mission-to-mission arcade space shooter. Very disappointing.

Game contains blatant satanic symbolism (pentagrams, demons, etc).

Gameplay could have been a lot longer and the story more developed in my opinion, but it's still decent at the $1.99 summer sale price (June 2021).

The new Rockstar DRM is designed to prevent people from playing offline under any circumstances. When my internet went down I decided to play some GTAV story mode to pass the time, only to be greeted by Rockstar's "Activation Required" notice ingame saying I have to be connected to the internet to authenticate my game JUST to play in Single Player.

Screw Rockstar.

Do not buy this game under any circumstances. It is completely unplayable due to poor optimization.

I'm playing this on an ASUS gaming laptop with a GTX960m and 16gb RAM, yet even running the game on minimum settings, it still consistently runs in the 20 FPS range on the beginning tutorial level.

I've googled this issue extensively and i've learned that nearly everyone - from low-end GPUs to people with 1080TIs - cannot run this game at any decent framerate, due to the horrid optimization.

All I want is to be able to play a fun realistic pirate game that actually freaking works and doesn't run like garbage. Is that too much to ask? With Assassins Creed 4, apparently so.

It's honestly a real shame, because the game looks like it could be a lot of fun. Too bad it runs choppier than a 1920s silent film.

If you've just bought the game as of reading this review, do yourself a favor and refund the game immediately. Don't bother trying to run it hoping for decent FPS because no matter what card you have, and no matter what optimizations you attempt to make on your end, the game will still run horribly. This is not a mere caution, it is a guarantee.

I am getting my money refunded ASAP and, with this having been my first taste of an Asassins creed game (and it apparently being the highest-rated assassins creed game on Steam), I have no plans to touch this franchise ever again. Very disappointed.

Early Access Review
Game fundamentally changes with every update, making stable gameplay virtually impossible. I spent a long time over the past 4 years playing this game, but whenever I played, I inevitably had to spend most of my time in singleplayer refitting everything I built, over and over, because every month an update would drop that would once again break all my ships I had already fixed from the previous month.

The game's community is incredibly toxic too but that's far too long and complicated a discussion to even bother getting into. Read the numerous other reviews that do explain why to see what i'm referring to.

That being said, the dev team themself have contributed to the drama problems in the community as much as the community has itself. Corruption in the game's development and moderation team has been a problem for years. Members of the development and moderation staff have on multiple times taken matters into their own hands and made inappropriate threats of legal action against players, and engaged in mass-censorship of negative reviews or opinions on the game.
The game's forum, StarMade Dock, is in fact down right now as of this review for that very reason, due to the massive amount of negative comments left by users who do not like the latest ground-up redesign of the game. Instead of listening and taking community feedback into account, the development team has decided to instead attack and censor their own playerbase.

All in all, this game had its prime time and that's long gone by now. The development team still has absolutely no consistency in what they want to do with the game's development (I was once an alpha tester working directly with the devs myself; it was an experience I would not want to repeat). They've fundamentally changed gameplay from the ground-up more than 4 times already, and there's no signs they plan to stop doing so in the future. They care very little about community input, opting to follow their own narrow "vision" for how they want the game to be.

The hype for this game has long since passed. The fickle mentality of the dev team has already driven off most of the player base, and the devs have literally squandered every opportunity they've had to make this game a truly great game. Don't bother playing. It's a waste of time. You're much better off playing Empyrion.

I don't think words could do this game justice for how incredible it is. I loved absolutely everything, from the gameplay mechanics, to the story, the music, and the level/art design. The only thing I think could've been a bit better would be the length of the game; it's fairly short and can be beaten in 6-10 hours easily. I was going for 100% completion and it only took me 11 hours. Still a great game all around. Even if you're not big on platformer/adventure games like Metroid and Castlevania, this game is still very fun! Get it!

Had a lot of trouble at first with playing multiplayer co-op with my friend, but a quick youtube tutorial helped solve that issue:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAyMjeN69iI

Luckily I already had the Sven port (27015) port-forwarded as I already use the same port for hosting Unturned.

So unfortunately while server setup is not as simple as start game -> join game through steam, it still works well.

So far i've been having fun, but one complaint I do have is that it's easy to accidentally lose your critical player items (eg. crowbar) and be unable to get them back, which can be a serious problem.

Overall though, not bad for a free-to-play standalone mod.
