Before I write my review I want to state my qualifications here:

I've played 14 different deck builder / card collector style games in the last year. Some of them for hundreds of hours all of them for at least a dozen plus hours. I state this because I want to let you reading this know that I understand the mechanics of these style games, and I'm not simply being salty.

This game is horribly out of balance.

I played four games and the best I did was about 5 or 6 fights under my belt before you get crushed. In the last game I played my hero trounced the first fight, then got to the second. Three enemies, two of which hit for 20 damage per, the other which hits for less but poisons. I can play defend cards to block 15 damage (but not poison) but each card costs 1 mana and I only have 3 mana. Are you seeing the problem? Even if I did nothing but play defends in a round I'd block 45 damage, take 40 from the two orcs, 10 from the mushroom, and get poisoned, net result; do no damage to them and take 5+ poison damage to me. Or, alternatively I can try to DPS burst them down. This was the choice I went with, got two down before I went from full life to dead over a few rounds.

This was the SECOND fight.

The fact that you have to unlock heroes AFTER rescuing them randomly is a little frustrating. As well you get to 'randomly' choose an artifact chest, but you don't actually get a choice, it's just random. You click on a chest and you randomly get an artifact, while showing you what you could have gotten. Why? Why not give the player a choice of three artifacts and let them pick? It's senseless.

Also the cost of cards in the shop is a bit too high in my opinion and the various crystals, gold, and blue (?) coins are never explained, leaving you to wonder what they are, how much you need, and what you do with them. That exploration isn't bad in it's own right, but is frustrating when paired with the TERRIBLE game balance.

I would not recommend this game. There are so many other, better, deck builders out there like Slay the Spire, Neoverse, The Last Hex, or if you want an RPG style game with this feel, check out Deck of Ashes.

I'll give this one another look if the devs seriously re-tune it. But otherwise into the junk bin it goes.

Quite enjoyable.

A strange variation on the RPG trope. It reminds me a bit of an RPG mixed with Darkest Dungeon, but minus the lovecraftian aesthetic, and replaced with norse viking flavor. It's brutally difficult, but also full of options at the beginning to make it more approachable. The characters are interesting and their dynamics doled out little by little give them a fun vibe that gives you another reason to keep trying to survive.

Worth a play in my opinion!

While on the surface the deckbuilding aspect is what jumped out at me right away, this game feels more like Kingdom New Lands or a tower defense game than a deck builder. Building and customizing your deck is important of course, but Ratropolis is a game where quick reactions, and careful planning meet RNG for a very fun and challenging experience with surprising depth and complexity.

I very much have enjoyed my time with this game and would absolutely tell anyone to check it out if it looks interesting to you.

Do not buy right now.

Bought the game on launch for $10. Enjoyed it, but then around hour 13 I ran into a game breaking bug. Spent a long time trying to fix it with no result. Finally go to the discussion page for the game and find that it's one of SEVERAL bugs in the release version of the game, it's well known, and the 'suggested fix' didn't do anything for me.

I think this game might be good if they fix all of the bugs, and there are several. But for right now, I wouldn't buy it, go play Xcom 2 WOTC instead.

-edit-
Started a new game because the previous save file was unplayable. Knowing how to avoid the game breaking bug by NEVER switching weapons once you assigned an epic weapon prevented the bug from happening on the next play through.

I found the game to be a LOT of fun, but it still crashed and had several minor small bugs repeatedly. I'd say on average the game crashed about once every 3-4 hours of play for absolutely no reason. Crashes seemed to happen more often when dealing with overwatch / reaction fire.

I loved the game, don't get me wrong, but until the bugs get sorted, I would not Recommend buying it.

9/10 game

Only loses points for the occasional glitch or corrupted save file. But you HAVE to get the WOTC DLC in my opinion. It's one of the best DLC ever imho. It basically makes Xcom 2 into Xcom 2.5

Picked this up for $4 USD on sale.

Played it for 4 hours in one sitting.

Feel like I could play it for another 40 easily.

Can't beat that kind of value with a stick.

A fantastic addition to the Doom franchise. But not perfect in my opinion. Let me get the cons out of the way first.

===CONS===
- Marauders - These bastards are so poorly designed and overpowered they just aren't fun. I died more fighting one of these things then I did any boss in the game.
- Precision platorming in order to progress - I don't mind the precision platforming, and I don't mind platforming to progress through a level, but it's TOO tight and TOO precise.
- Battlemode - The multiplayer is not what players want and is currently at the time of this writing exploitable, rendering it worthless.
- Plot - I guess?

===PROS===
- Everything else… seriously. The gunplay, the music, the level design, the enemies (save the marauder), the boss fights, the puzzles, the platforming challenges, and most of all the nostalgia… just spot on.

Like, honestly, there were times I stopped running through levels and just looked around. From the nearly heavenlike Urduk to the hellscapes to the ruins of what might be New York City, every bit of level design just seems amazingly crafted. I also noticed the homage to the original Doom games in some of the textures, as if Bethesda saught to give us some of those old textures again, which is amazing. In fact there are several parts of nostalgia, and they don’t really shove it in your face, but just, let it sit there. From Doomguy holding a brown skinned bunnyrabbit to the names of some of the levels. The 40+ year old in me fondly caught a lot of the subtle references and loved it every time.

The combat is great, and while it’s MUCH faster paced and frentic than Doom 2016, it still worked, even for someone like me with arthritis and slow reflexes, though I did have to play on a slightly easier setting then I would have liked. The variety of weapons lets you play with a style you like, and forces you to switch at times. But the refilling fuel on the chainsaw and using it to gain ammo means you’re only one zombie, soldier, or gargoyle away from an ammo refill.

Sadly this leads into my biggest gripe about the game. The new enemy the Marauder is COMPLETELY broken. It can hurl bolts at long range, shotgun or melee you at close range, it summons a ghost cat that attacks you in melee from the sides, it can teleport, and it can bring up a forcefield INSTANTLY every single time you try to shoot at it. The only way to beat it is wait for it to attack you and you get a zero point one second window to shoot it when it’s eyes flash green. If you aren’t aiming directly at it (because you’re killing the ghost cat for example) you’ll miss your chance. The timing on this feels really terrible and very punishing. There were fights I used up 3 of my “extra lives” fighting this, but was able to one shot the final boss of the game without dying. Very broken, very poor design, and by far the biggest blemish in otherwise fantastic combat.

All told, I’ve really enjoyed the game and would recommend the game to anyone who is thinking about it. I just hope they tweak the Marauder and fix battlemode….and for the love of god, give us a heckin death match mode!

I bought this game when it first came out and played it for a little while but it never hooked me. Then a few weeks ago I gave it a second shot after hearing it had much improved since launch. Oh man, it absolutely did. The game is a wonderful romp through a wonderfully non procederually generated world with crafting, murder, and exploration in spades. Playing on a server with members of my community really gave me a feel that I hadn't had since the days that I played MMOs, but without really feeling like an mmo. Instead I got that sense of multiplayer and exploration aspects that I wanted without the burning need or desire to grind or log on at certain times like modern day MMOS.

I really enjoyed my time with this game and would recommend it highly.

Do you like tactical euro style board games? Do you like Dungeons and Dragons? If so this is an easy buy for you. I happen to love both and find this game complex enough to be engaging but not so difficult as to have a barrier to entry. Furthermore, unlike other board game adaptations to digital format, D&D Lords of Waterdeep seems to be free of any weird or misleading mechanics that lock you into certain actions at certain times, with a 'confirm each action' that doesn't feel restricting, but instead makes sure your turns play out the way you wanted, without forgetting to do crucial actions.

The mechanics will be familiar to anyone who's played Slay the Spire or those types of games, but where Rise of the Slime really shines is in the adorable graphics and masterful audio. I look forward to what this game has to offer in future updates.
