Northern Journey is a pretty unique FPS experience. The game is mostly linear but does have exploration and some backtracking. Each section of the game has its own unique encounters with enemies unique to each area. There is a good sense of atmosphere and exploration that permeates the game even though many areas are pretty linear. While the game is linear, it also doesn't really hold your hand either which I found added a lot to the exploration. Almost none of the game feels samey or padded in the way many other games do. The weapons are also pretty unique in that they are mostly medieval and they use a different aiming system compared to guns.

Being made by one person, it is not a perfect experience. The visuals feel a bit primitive at times with clunky looking NPC and enemy models. There are some oddities with player collision with the environment, and sometimes the mechanics of certain sections feel like they just barely work. One section towards the end of the game also felt like it went on for a little too long with not enough happening. There are also some odd difficulty spikes, and you may have to retry some encounters several times before beating them. I don't want to get too descriptive because it really is worth going into as blind as you can.

I would highly recommend Northern Journey to anyone who doesn't mind a little visual and gameplay jank. I found it a lot more interesting and memorable than most FPS games. You might also not be able to play the game if you have crippling arachnophobia. There are many spider enemies.
