Fallout 76 is such a painfully confused game. It's clearly made by people who love the feel of Bethesda's flagship singleplayer games yet it forcefully steers clear of what makes them great games. The classic Bethesda-game element is wandering around, finding some interesting tower, fighting your way up the tower, and discovering some quirky story and some loot or collectable. In Fallout 76, when you climb that airport control tower you won't find anything at the top, no loot, no holotapes, nothing. Then, ten minutes later, an automated quest will have you climb that same tower only to discover a key, a holotape, and a whole lore-dump terminal.

I'm not sure if I can communicate how thoroughly I can convey that having a game that prides itself on exploration actively discourage exploration breaks the concept of this game. Singleplayer Bethesda-games rely on being able to reward the player for screwing around but the online, competitive, and importantly real-money balance of the game relies on not letting you drift too strong or powerful through its quests.

The exploration is pretty, like wandering through the forests south-west of Riverwood yet as barren was walking through a developer test level. I've never had a Bethesda-game make me dread finding a fascinating waypoint, but if you go into that cool abandoned prison there's nothing inside for you to find unless you find the relevant quest beforehand.

I don't think this game can be saved as the core concept seems to be fundamentally broken.

Going Under is a really special game. I can't remember the last time a game had an art style that added so much to a game. The atmosphere, visual effects, color choices, and animations perfectly capture the 2018-2022 "corporate art" style that's so easy to vilify.

The moment to moment dungeon crawing is pretty fun and encourages an improvisational style that entails quickly scanning your surroundings and making do withe the wide variety of weapons you find. The soundtrack is a blast to listen to and just adds to the fun.

It's sad this game didn't blow up as it could have gotten so much more through it's updates.

Overall, this is one hell of a stylish and fun improvisational rouge-lite dungeon crawler that absolutely nails its satire.

Superliminal really scratches the itch that the first Portal game did. The primary challenge of the game, navigating and manipulating a 3D environment as a first person puzzle feels wonderful. It wasn't incredibly challenging, but it was really interesting to navigate these spaces. A common complaint I have with these non-euclidean environments is motion sickness -- like with Antichamber -- and though I felt a bit towards the end, the game feels fairly grounded thanks to its excellent use of lighting, materials, and oddly enough reflections.

It was incredibly satisfying to play and didn't waste my time.

Sure, it's true that they've put a lot of work into this game and yes, it has been improved by its updates but raving reviews by fans are different from what it's like to play. I've played it on and off since launch and I don't recommend you get into this game unless you really don't have anything else to do.

It's buggy as heck. I'm no stranger to games like Skyrim and Fallout 4 that can become borderline unplayable very rapidly but without any mods NMS might drop you through a fake floor, send you flying into space, delete items you spent hours crafting, or even forget your entire base. That kind of instability could have been excusable for the first year, but it's three years later and I'm getting bugs that I could have sworn were solved years ago.

Even if you can get past the general atmosphere of instability, VR is so disappointing. Not that it's inherently bad, but that it could be so much better. Loading up the game in VR might make your controllers disappear, button prompts vanish, or nothing might happen at all as HG didn't set default controls. When it works, it makes all the bugs feel so much worse as you'll see what the game could be and what HG sorta wants. And when it doesn't work, you'll just feel heartbroken as you watch your prized ship vibrate back and forth before exploding.

Overall, I've spent over 75 hours in the game. It's obvious that I enjoyed it enough to keep playing, but when I think back, I can't figure out why I spent so much time here instead of playing anything else.

Like all Bethesda Gamebryo/Creation Engine games, it's a compromise and Fallout 4 VR is probably the greatest test of Bethesda's min-maxing towards player freedom and away from optimization. The game runs... ok. As long as your headset has some form of framerate upscaling (Oculus ASW, SteamVR+Windows MR Motion Reprojection) you'll probably have a good time as long as you keep your expectations modest. The engine's reliance on asset streaming in large areas can cause bursts of multi-second lag, meaning this is one game where your hard drive's sequential read speed performance can impact framerate.

Despite all this, I fell in love with Fallout 4 VR in ways I couldn't with Fallout 4 Pancake Edition. The visceral feeling running and gunning in such a massive and (perhaps) gorgeous world is unlike any other, except maybe Skyrim VR.

I have a few gameplay tips for Windows Mixed Reality players. Hold left trigger to turn on your flashlight. Your left hand (or off hand) controller sometimes has contextual prompts when you point at an item in the world (Silver Shroud Quest, assigning settlers to supply lines). Hold your off hand controller's menu button to enter/exit workshop mode. Brace your gun hand against your off hand if you're having trouble getting a perfectly accurate shot. Grenades are hard to throw with WMR, use mines until you feel confident.

But to really get everything out of the game, you should really pursue...

Modding

You probably want to mod Fallout 4 VR. You're really not getting the full experience without cracking open Mod Organizer or Vortex and spending hours creating your own work of art. A good starting place would be /r/fo4vr and one of the several guides there. Many people much smarter than me have collected their optimal modlists and ini configs and I'll let you be the judge of what you want out of your game. That said, there are several easy pitfalls when approaching FO4VR modding.

Make sure none of the mods break the 'mesh precombines'. They're a way that the engine can merge a large number of objects into only a few draw calls and keeping them enabled is very important otherwise you won't be able to even get near Downtown Boston. Most of the landscape theme change mods like Commonwealth Conifers will break these. I highly recommend Fallout 4 Seasons[www.nexusmods.com] as a way to improve the game's landscape atmosphere without destroying performance.

Next, beware of mods that change the long-distance "LOD" map as some of them can cause CTDs (NeuraLOD is one such offender, FAR seems ok).

Any mod that requires FO4SE won't work as you expect as FO4VRSE is totally different from FO4SE (as of Sept 2019), though many mods that 'require' FO4SE only need it for MCM menus. YMMV.

Another odd pitfall is that 'loose' mods can really hamper your experience. Remember when I mentioned hard drive read speed? Once you start using loose mods that dump their overwrites into the filesystem, suddenly your hard drive needs to jump around a whole bunch to locate these files meaning your read speed is now dependent on your random read speed, which can sometimes be abysmal compared to sequential. This can make it so that walking around anywhere will cause horrible multi-second hangs as assets load when you wander the wasteland. Having a few loose overwrite mods is fine, but try to stick to BA2 versions of mods where you can.

Last, this is more of a recommendation than pitfall, but you can totally install the FO4 DLC into the VR version. I've only seem some obnoxious YouTube videos try to explain but the high level jist is that you need to copy the DLC .esm files (not Fallout4.esm!) from your Fallout 4 Data folder into your Fallout 4 VR Data folder. Then, you need to navigate to %localappdata%\Fallout4 and copy DLCList.txt into %localappdata%\Fallout4VR.

Conclusion

If you read this far, congrats. I hope this gives you a good idea of the technical and mental investment that this game involves just to play it. If you're like me, modding is almost as fun as playing and Fallout 4 VR makes all of Bethesda's compromises worthwhile. Games like this make me really happy that Bethesda hasn't given up on their crazy runtime-interpreted game engine with its wonky and stunted scripting, tiresome form editing, and super inefficient rendering practices.

Spec Notes

I got a great experience out of using my Windows Mixed Reality headset. The tracking certainly isn't the best but the high resolution easily makes up for that. The controllers are irritating to replace the batteries in, but the fact they have both a trackpad and joystick makes them great to use.

Played using a Windows MR Headset (Dell Visor)

I'll admit that the concept might seem pretty goofy and if you've tried a similar concept before you might be pretty turned away from swinging your arms to move in VR but hot dang does this work amazingly in SkyrimVR.

After a while of playing it really becomes natural to just swing your arms to wander through fields and down long winding roads. The tracking logic is utterly superb with accurate speeds and really great directional movement. You can swap between two handed movement to one handed, even back to joystick controls when you need accurate platforming or combat movement.

The jump detection can be a little wonky, but you can turn off nearly any feature you don't like.

$10 for a mod might seem high at first glance, but the way it adds to the experience is really superb and you can tell that a huge amount of time and effort has gone into making this an amazing piece of software.

In a way, Surviving Mars borrows more from Dwarf Fortress than Cities Skylines. The game is primarily micromanaging supply and demand imbalances caused by your growth. The ingame UI for analyzing this is there, but is hidden under several menus and could be improved.

The game has some balance issues as certain upgrades don't actually make sense (rip Hawking Laboratory). Certain aspects of micromanaging are really irritating like manually moving colonists between domes to fix homelessness/unemployment.

Overall the game is fun and the first few hours are really quite enthralling as you explore what's possible on the red planet. The later game (as I've explored so far), slows down the game as you fix various imbalances and correct your previous designs to work with new technologies you discover.

SkyrimVR has:
- Very shallow interactions
- An inefficient user interface
- Occasional hiccups from the game not having proper VR interactions
- Very basic melee combat

And yet this is probably one of my favorite VR games to date.
- The pacing is really excellent. Most VR games try to get you right into the action with really high intensity action all the time yet SkyrimVR has an excellent balance of short combat encounters and long stretches of exploration.
- SkyrimVR runs excellently and benefits greatly from adding a huge number of mods (check out r/skyrimvr for recommendations) while still hitting solid framerates.
- You're in a gorgeous world. Other VR games might give you more detailed and fascinating worlds to play in, SkyrimVR's scale really sets in once you've walked from one hold to another picking flowers and catching butterflies along the way.

Overall, it's a really compelling and chill game to play in VR, especially with a WindowsVR headset as the controls are superb.
