This is probably a good game, but I came in expecting more of Doom (2016). It isn't.
Gone are the carefully crafted maps, the carefully crafted music, the carefully crafted mechanics. It feels like a shell of the previous doom.
The most annoying things so far:
* Melee does no damage. What?
* Weapons and keycards and upgrades no longer feel part of the world.. they just float there.
* Same for lore and secrets. No pads or secret levers, just floating pages and floating giant question marks. It's no longer an immersive world.
* Running out of ammo. Constantly. Having to use the chainsaw every 5 enemies to get ammo. It's stupid. Edit: even after upgrading to maximum ammo, it's still not enough. The shotgun only holds 12 shots, for example. There is some strategy involved in when to use which weapon, but with only 4 ammo types (5 if you count bfg), once you run out on one weapon, you'll also run out on the other. Final edit: ok, the chainsaw refills itself. Ammo is never an issue anymore, because you can just keep chainsawing forever. This gets very tedious, however.
* Platforming. A little bit is okay, but you're supposed to jump from ledge to ledge and if you miss, you're dead. Also, jumping from wall to wall is almost a puzzle as it's barely visible which walls you can jump and which you can't. edit: I'm a bit further in the game now and it has progressed to double jump to double dash to recharge dash in mid air to dash some more to jump to horizontal bar to jump to dropping platform through fire and electric barricades. I wish I was kidding.

I'll continue to play to finish the campaign, but I wanted to throw this out there for people thinking about buying it in the summer sale: this is not the greatness of the previous doom. Wait till it's at least 75% off.

Final edit: Ok I have now finished the game. My points all remain the same. I'll give the game one thing: it is very pretty. The environments are amazing to look at.
But it's just not as fun to play as the previous doom. The music never goes to 11, I never got the "this is awesome!" feeling, the entire game feels like a chore. The story is.. whatever. They retconned Samuel Hayden's character and some other stuff. Half of the story is just loads of text that you have to read in a crappy interface (tip: read the codices on the wiki instead of ingame).

Maybe it's me...

Final final edit: F you id/Bethesda for the extent that you screwed Mick Gordon over. I knew something was wrong but holy crap. No more money for you. Ever.

The trailer made this game look a lot more fun than it actually is. The game itself is rather repetitive and grindy. A lot of things are illogical. It's also somewhat buggy. During my game there was a game-breaking bug, but luckily it was fixed. Yet many minor bugs still remain.
The story is extremely lacking and weak and only serves to justify the core gameplay loop which is just a grindfest anyway.

Do not get this game, not even on sale. You'll just get frustrated. It feels like a chore instead of a game.

I wanted to like this game, I've put quite a bit of hours in, but dear lord is it tedious. It has a great atmosphere and writing, but everything is extremely slow and grindy. Also, rather difficult to get into without guides. The game shows you stuff that should have been under the hood ([item] sets [event] to [1], need [item] x [amount] to start [event]) which makes it rather confusing. Maybe I should have watched videos of this before playing...

Very short game with a ton of easy puzzles, meanwhile it tries to be smart with its story but it really isn't, and at times has horrible audio quality without subtitles which the devs call an "artistic decision". Not worth more than $5.
