Far Cry Primal is the best far cry game in my opinion. For context, I have played and completed Far Cry, Far Cry 2, 3, and 5.

The setting is prehistoric earth. The gameplay in many ways resembles classic far cry: explore your surroundings, obtain crafting materials, take down enemies and installations, unlock better abilities, etc etc. However there are some key differences here... firstly the game is very hard on normal difficulty. You will be killed not only by other caveman tribes, but also by roaming animals. If you are nowhere near a campfire as the sun sets you are virtually guaranteed to be attacked by something.

But wait! You can learn how to tame creatures that roam the wilds! Once you do this you have an entire assortment of wild creatures who will come to your aid, follow you around and give you little buffs. If the animal becomes injured you can heal it. If it dies you no longer have access to it... but no worries you can just tame another one.

There are several very powerful unique elite animals in the game that you can tame also. You can become very attached to these animals! If they die they are dead permanently. One such animal of mine died and I was devastated and stopped playing the game for several years! That is how attached you can become.

Another difference from most of the far cry games is that the atmosphere is very tense. You would be wise to listen carefully for shouts, grunts, squeals... every sound has meaning and creates tension. At night this is especially true. I never felt completely in control until close to the end when I was adept at the controls and had all my most powerful animal companions available. Even so, the boss battles were tough to beat.

The environment is a wonder to behold. Jungles are thick with vegetation, cold mountains are filled with chilling showstorms, dark caves feel damp and foreboding. Ancient places are scattered about and thoughtfully constructed. This is a believable, immersive world.

The game does not overstay its welcome either. The length seems just about right at around 80-100 hours for me, someone who typically completes 70-90% of a game which includes all the little unnecessary tidbits.

The story that is told is appropriate for the setting and fits perfectly. Some might feel like the depiction of ancient man is a bit "off" but I actually think that based on recent findings, the scenario is plausible. I liked the characters. By the end I really became fond of them. There were some touching moments.

I have to give this game a very high rating. If you like open work action games, this is a must play.

10/10.
