Early Access Review
Incredible zombie sandbox that is just packed with so much detail around every little thing that you do in the game. Deaths in this game can range from brutal like tripping after cutting yourself on a fence thus leading to a swarm of zombies eating you, to really funny and unfortunate like getting so depressed and bored that you catch a massive fever from any trace of dead folk giving you Corpse Sickness which can eventually turn you into a zombie in your own home.

This game makes it very clear that you will die, alot. The tutorial alone forces you into a unwinnable state, and every character you start you will be notified that this story that you are playing is how you die.

Zomboid is a very open-ended and easily tweakable game that has so many different small difficulty tweaks that you can change to make your playthrough perfect. Whether its going for the base zombie survival where one bite can lead to you becoming another part of the undead that you can later kill to get your gear back, the Sprinter zombie horde deathcrawl with max weapon and ammo spawns for your fix of action, or something chilled out with lessened spawns and abundant natural resources- the path that you take for this game is all your choice.

Main issues that I have with it are that the combat isn't exactly satisfying- it's very slow and clunky but that is definitely the intention as you're meant to kite around zombies instead of taking them head-on. The other is difficulty balance around the Zombie AI in particular. It's not exactly fair when the world can randomly force the player to have lessened vision in instances such as heavy fog, night time, and rain- but the Zombies can still spot you like normal- even with the option tweak where their vision range is supposed to be lower. This option does not change anything, even with the Inconspicuous trait. The grind for skills can also be unreasonable and there are many folks out there who made it their goal to max out every possible skill and it can take hundreds of in-game days to do so- which I guess is also kind of the point that your character is specialized instead of being the king of the apocalypse right off the bat like other games.

But those issues can be easily remedied with mods, this game is so easy to tweak and fix- you really could just stitch this together to your heart's content and end up with one of the best survival crafting experiences.
Zomboid: despite how big the Zombie genre got (and seemingly dropped off the face of the planet)- is so unique to the survival approach and worth playing if you are a fan or even new to the genre. Total recommendation from me, this game is ace.
