This is one of those games that I feel are a must-play, and for multiple reasons.

The Art Style is incredibly breathtaking. I've never seen so much detail in pixel art before, and every inch of the game is just fantastic to look at. The immense detail in the art-direction makes not only building in the game incredibly satisfying, but also exploring. Every planet and block just explodes with detail and intense-care that there are some parts of the game where you just sit back and are astounded by how beautiful it looks. The artists behind the game deserve the upmost amount of praise for the sheer amount of dedication and care they put into crafting the most gorgeous pixel-art I've ever seen.

The Workshop not only adds to the game, but in some cases can absolutely change it from the ground-up. There are add-ons that allow you to play as races not available by default, add-ons that add a vast array of different planets and dungeons, add-ons that extend the amount of missions and add an RPG-system, add-ons that add their own weapon system, or even add-ons that completely change how you start the game and progress from scratch, making the game play completely differently from how it would in vanilla. The sheer amount of heart and soul in the content on the workshop is what will always keep me coming back to this game, and seeing creators continue to produce beautiful and astounding content for the community is what will keep Starbound's life blood flowing for a long time.

There's also what is my next favorite part, which is The Instruments. Almost every song that is vanilla and from the workshop sound absolutely beautiful on the instruments in the game, and I sometimes find myself standing there playing music for a few minutes at a time just because of how beautiful some of the songs sound on things like the Acoustic Guitar or Harp. Even if you want to play the game Vanilla, I highly suggest you download a few music add-ons. They won't alter your vanilla experience too much, and will definitely bless your ears when you decide to give a few songs a listen.

All-in-all, there's just too many good things about this game for me to not recommend it. It's not perfect, it has it's faults like lag and debatable optimization, but all of that seems trivial when compared to all the game has to offer. The workshop content alone is enough for me to suggest this game to anyone who wants emphasis on exploration and progression. I cannot praise the detail in the art enough, nor can I praise all of the other details in the game enough.

When it comes to vanilla, you can probably get around 30 hours out of it if you take your time and explore, enjoy yourself, and keep at a steady pace. If you want to dabble in workshop content, you're looking at hundreds if not thousands of hours of content to enjoy, all from new planets and star systems to new encounters, new NPCs, new weapons, new mechanics, and much much more. Out of the 361 hours I currently have in the game, I regret not a single one.

As I said at the beginning. This game is a must-play. It has its shortcomings, but the amount of things it has going for it makes all of that simply trivial. The game doesn't receive consistent official content updates, but I do believe the workshop more than makes up for that. Most definitely give this absolute gem a try.

NOTE: If you go into this game expecting an experience like Terraria, you will be very disappointed. Despite this game seeming like it will play like Terraria, this game puts MUCH more emphasis on its story, exploration, and building. Where Terraria has you creating arenas to fight bosses that you summon, Starbound focuses on you exploring planets and getting invested in the story, although there are still bosses. Starbound is best enjoyed when not expecting it to be Terraria.

Early Access Review
At this point in time, I cannot recommend this game, and after this review, I will be uninstalling the game. I think a lot of YouTube videos can outline the overall problem with the game in terms of mechanics, grinding, and the gacha mechanic, however I'll simply be outlining my own problems with the game.

Of course, since it's a Free-To-Play game, and like a large majority of F2P games, anyone who puts money into the game is immediately at an advantage, and that's a mechanic I simply can't support or enjoy.

The game has latency problems. Earlier I was playing with mediocre at best connection, and just recently I tried to play and could hardly move without stuttering around.

I've had three separate occasions where I wanted to uninstall the game, but told myself "No.. it'll get better." only for it to obviously not get any better. My other friends are having fun with the game, and I seem to be one of the only people in the group not enjoying it, so maybe the game is just after me and doesn't want me to enjoy it; but regardless, this was the last straw.

Not to mention the game takes ages to open and ages to close. It took me 10 minutes just to log in and collect dailies, and the only reason I even continued playing was because the gameplay loop can be addictive when you're not stuttering and teleporting around into enemy attacks.

Overall, until these issues with the game get fixed, I cannot see myself playing nor enjoying Kurtzpel any longer. The Mixed reviews now make total and complete sense, and I can't be bothered to spend another hour playing this game. At least I didn't waste any money.

This game is stupidly poorly optimized, unfortunately. I had a perfect time playing the game 48 hours ago on Medium, the game itself running well over 60 fps. However, after loading it up today I've experienced nothing but hardcore stuttering and rubberbanding that always happens whenever I engage in firefights. It's a shame to see a game I was enjoying and wanting to actively become better in be so poorly optimized.

On a completely different note, I'd like to mention how a lot of the maps have extremely, EXTREMELY poor design. I went in positive about the map design not being bad, however after falling into a plethora of holes that are located in the middle of floors for some reason, I realized that the reviews saying the map design was poor may not have been that biased any longer.

Oh, and a load of weapons need to be nerfed. A lot of weapons have the ability to unfairly one-shot, and that means that approaching someone who has said weapon is near impossible due to the fact that if they see you, you die immediately.

I want to enjoy this game very very badly. But it has a long way to go and I fear that once Reach comes to Steam, it'll be abandoned. It's a shame to see, honestly.

As someone who has recently completed the first season of content, as well as previously put 50+ hours into the Beta, I can pretty much guarantee that a lot of the problems that circulated around with the Beta have been fixed, and a lot of the Negativity people have surrounding the game (as well as their comparisons to other games) are pretty much innacurate.

The game itself is incredibly enjoyable to play, and if you're not just immediately going into it so you can grumble angrily at the main menu, you'll probably actually end up enjoying yourself. It can be incredibly difficult at times, and often seemingly impossible to complete certain missions by your lonesome, which feels like it does indeed force a style of play where you need a team to complete objectives on occasion.

There is an incredibly important emphasis on resource and ammunition reserving, and thus you will end up using your melee weapon throught the whole mission until around the end or until you come upon humans at the many mid-way points. While some can complain about the melee, I haven't found it clunky or annoying to use, and have instead gotten accustomed to how the weapons work and how they swing.

There are a lot of decisions about the game that are concerning, but that would go into spoiler territory, so I will not talk about those decisions Overkill made. But, what I can say, is that I have enjoyed myself through the story, and will continue to enjoy myself through the life-cycle of the game for the foreseeable future.

Do I Recommend OVERKILL's The Walking Dead?
If you're still iffy about the game and are not sure if you'll end up enjoying it, then I'd suggest picking up a cheaper game key from any Game-Key website, or waiting for a sale and giving it a try then. However, if you feel like this is a game you can see yourself enjoying, then I certainly recommend it!

I just wish they made a new map for it. Would've enjoyed being in SR's version of Washington DC like in the beginning.

The overwhelming amount of positivity this game has recieved is well-deserved. For a 2D side-scroller, the game has much, much more going for it than you'd expect, initially. To make the cake even sweeter, you can install community-created Mods, which not only add more to do in the game, but more often than not add a whole new level of challenge and exploration that'll surely catch you off-guard.

I cannot recommend this game enough. I previously only spent about ten minutes in the game, however after getting into it with some friends and discovering all it had to give, I put over a hundred hours, and I enjoyed every second of it.

If you're on the fence about buying the game, definitely do so. It may seem simple and odd on the surface, but once you get into it, you're treated to one of, if not the best retro survival game of all time!

Forgot to mention, not only is the community still thriving, but the game is still getting updated, and will be updated from here on out. Even so, there's plenty of mods to fit your fancy.

If I was to give it a number out of 10, I'd honestly give it a 10

One of the best games I've ever played, and it didn't even cost more than $10

Early Access Review
This game is great, in all honesty. The combat is fluid and expansive, leaving for a variety of different combinations to be made, the music is beautiful (especially how the melody changes when you hover over characters), and the characters themselves remind very highly of the Fighting is Magic characters with their own personal twists.

As the game is right now, it's amazing, especially for Early Access!

However, there is only one issue, and that is the difficuly of the Ai. I played Arcade Mode, and in the final two battles against the constly blocking and combo-ing Ai can be a bit frustrating, and leave you abusing the fact that they sometimes don't know how to get out of foot-sweeping. This is to be expected, however I had the Ai on Easy, and though I can never complain about a challenge, this seemed less like a challenge and more of a "ya tried"

Like I said, the game is absolutely worth the price tag, especially with the content that may be present in the future. I'm looking forward to the next big update, as well as what new characters Mane6 may add and the story they may present!

In Conclusion:
This game is worth the price tag. You may think I'm just a brony drooling over a successor to a game he wanted to play but never got to, but let me tell you, that's not (most) of the case. The game is technically and visually amazing. It presents a world and characters and gameplay that's completely original and a blast to experience! The game's definitely worth picking up in Early Access!
