┌──────────────────────── ∘°❉°∘ ────────────────────────┐

from the depths of oceanside the curios lapped through festering sanguine marbled layers
upon reactions to visual expedience from adventuresome signs and similar visages
written for the thrilling enjoyment of ambiguous genus from unfamiliar taxonomy
a galore of trepid novel classics that cosmically pulls asunder from looming stars

└──────────────────────── °∘❉∘° ────────────────────────┘

truely a classic of its era.
mostly fully voice acted with inventory menu point and click adventure
brilliant pixel art efforts deeply hindered by its visual timing programming
audio offsets and long pauses break the immersion enough to want a fix, which there are none.
perhaps alternates to dosbox may offer more "exact" style gameplay
without it, we're left with the simplest efforts to playthrough
accordingly, the floppy disk came first and the voice over additions really dont sync no matter what you attempt
its either slow as beans or too fast, you can live with slow or ignore the long pauses

not to say the game is without faults.
infact there are some glaring issues, softlocks, moonlogic, even figuring out just what youre supposed to do.
there are no hints in the game like many better adventure games which nudge you ex: "maybe you could do this"
saving often is often a requirement for older games because you can die, softlock, or do progress out of order
such said, to save my insanity, i use a walkthrough which may lack some more hilarious (save and die) trial and error

bonus editions with a lore gallery museum and paper documents
floppy disk & demos have differences from the full cd version
pc98 japanese computer fully playable in dosbox-x or np2kai

a vast library of mythos to pull ideas from, lovecraft still continues to proliferate

This isn't for your eyes!
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.
We have such sights to show you!
We'll tear your soul apart!
Ah, the suffering. The sweet, sweet suffering.

the throws of madness descend upon our little abyssal criterions
otherworldly visions delight the receptors through dithering holes of blocks
from minimal frequents there exist beyond a greater sense of dread

there are more horrible things than allowing your fate to be determined by the unemotional logic of a processing computer
psychologically, you, and other people are the worst things on this planet.

while the book does a good job of conjuring up a sentient artificial intelligence hell bent on hate, torture, and zealous control
the game itself allows that aspect to take a backseat, allowing the player to conceptualize a standard of morality
by discovering each plot through the adventures you begin to depict that not everyone here on this earth was of a sound mind

quite tonally set during the cold war era paranoia and skeptical espionage of its era, the 1960s highlighted some serious political debates and contesting the long standing grudges of different worldly opinions

my first playthrough i attempted, succesfully, the good ending finale requiring the characters to make choices and actions that were not going to get them negative karma, or killed

the characters, voices, and artistic visual scenes are all very well done with SVGA 640x480 256 color graphics
the game manual quite plainly explains that the author himself, harlan ellison, voices the AM, and was involved in storyboarding process and reviewing the new script for the game.
i agree with the author that not every playable game should have a "win" and literature as an artistic medium should allow someone to create a failed state even when adapted to an interactive fiction
you are allowed to have a dissatisfied bad taste after realizing all your efforts were for not

while playing the scummvm port (v2.0.0) i was more frustrated with minor nuances that dont seem to be ported correctly or "buggy" at best lets say. while i have not played the original dos/win3x dosbox version to compare, which may have also been a buggy mess.
there are times a cutscene plays but flips out, stops playing, or displays something else on the scene OR flat out doesnt appear to play (observing the eyes) maybe there is more i missed
music (midi) seems to suddenly stop entirely, maybe cued by some interaction or just decides for itself to be done playing music. until a scripted action occurs or you load a save. these could be original errors or the "early" scummvm port itself
at this point i am wondering if the latest scummvm has any fixes, it doesnt appear that something was announced officially for patches to the game engine...

i would say im not done with the game, i intend to explore the "differences" through dosbox, and possibly revisit the different possible endings. as well as import the game files into a more recent version of scummvm and test if it is also broken in some respects.

the release date appears wrong on most sites, perhaps not indicating it was originally released first in 1995 (october 31 1995)
and, let me say, releasing a game on halloween has a very significant intent

"GRIM?" no this is Prim, Primrose, or primula vulgaris.

here is a very traditional point and click adventure game with full voice dialog.
a full "grim dark" setting telling the story of the grim reaper (death) and his daughter's adventures.
presented with a highly german expressionism style of tim burton art style, full of aesthetic angles and morose figures

* the basics of a point and click are quite simple:
look at thing for flavor text (voice dialog)
interact with thing to see if it is usable
grab thing into inventory if maybe it can be used later somwhere else (game mechanics)
process of exhaustion - try thing with thing until thing works to progress

* quality and narrative:
visually the dark art is very well designed and animated well enough for its presentation
the story compels you forward through interesting characters and vocals
take a step back and read the story as a whole, a novel, it is quite good enough as itself

* the adventuring story:
through interactions and dialogs we gather a story
movement around the world brings us new interactions and challenges
puzzles or collectables sometimes detour our desires to progress

* puzzles and minigames:
no matter what these adventures often encounter some moon logical design choices
a puzzle box isnt a puzzle without some thoughtful logic and frustration
the concept of a minigame required to advance is much like requiring a round of gambling to afford some item in most adventure games. while simple enough with a bit of RnG and the LONG WAIT TIMES it just becomes a chore to get through to continue with the story...

* game engine:
UNITY. originally the demo presented a visplayer (visonaire game studio) adventure game
there must have been some choice to adopt a higher level game engine, limitations present by the more rudimentary adventure visplayer engine

worked more or less flawlessly on

at once the flames burn through purposeful ellipsis of ventured wastes
another formless encounter shambles forth among the soothing selfless encrustments
favored epiphanies tangibly twist gorged fleeting banalities on wingless flightless shores
distance dreamed remembered as once at duplicate doppleganged graingers
