lets preface the essential parts of the story of hellblade 2: senua's saga

its a combat puzzle game with exceptional visual quality and a story
but its a walking sim, extremely linear, and best played in one whole fast blur of time

the quality of visuals is high, wonderfully done atmosphere and setting
thankful with the budget of microsoft, very polished unreal engine 5 settings that works (mostly) this is definitely one of the most optimized games utilizing ue5 that i have played, though that may be a low number of games experienced.
i noticed possibly one or two reflection errors through my playthrough...
the difference between "HIGH" and the new enhanced "VERY HIGH" are marrginal visually, unless comparing a screenshot to screenshot visual comparison... it is most likely not worth the additional detail for the loss in performance
further, the game never crashed or gave me a buggy mess, although i did not play release day unpatched

the lore of norse mythology and aspects of "horror" brought me back to continue the previous story
this i was not disappointed in but it is very Lite on deep introspection beyond this tangential narrative of senua
i found myself less interested in the people (npcs) than the backstory told by the narrator and the giants of lore

the problem with the "borders" this entirely should have been an option in the menus to disable and customize it
at first i was thinking "oh its cinematic" ok i get it, sure cinematic. then a glimpse in the discussion/guides and i realized i could turn it off. so i did turn it off, and it is without a doubt a better experience on a measly 1080p monitor to have the full screen exposed both in the cinematic scenes and in the gameplay.
especially now with the enhanced patches; without the borders the game is 10-15% more demanding on your GPU, this should have been part of the patches to improve visuals and experience.

combat seems fluid enough to pass a test of "are we fluid yet" but the static void of actual skill involved is mostly timing and training. block block dodge attack, later block block press magic button then kill. the combat is very stiffly inserted as stop-gaps between narratives. it looks visually appealling but the mechanics are rudimentary

without stopping to take in the air and look around at things, tinker with photomode, or adjust quality slider settings: this game is very short. a game that doesnt overstay its welcome but also leaves you wanting more substance, a deeper interaction with the world, and something kindling the 100+ hour story driven gameplay of a well made game


take comparative gameplay and narrative as your choice if you wish to support a "smaller" visual cinematic game company
i could say there arent enough negative points, there are some glaring issues. however, its not the worst game below 50% threshold to fault it.

my GPU isnt top end, amd rx 7800xt/7900M laptop, midrange expectations
my main issue was struggling with a temperature fault, due to factory installation error...
$35 and a repaste (PTM pad & ram upsiren putty) and its back to maximums
experimenting with FSR3 and XeSS without FrameGen was tedious and has clear issues
installing patch for Optiscaler and FSR4 on RDNA3 is interesting and clears up some of those visual issues


lastly, i play exclusively on GNU/Linux using steamplay proton, dxvk/vkd3d, vulkan.

the QOL updates are ... "interesting" to say the least
nothing i would choose to use, as an artist and critic

its good that a new generation of gamers can experience the classics in new ways
its good that modern consoles can play them as they were limited to PC and n64 for decades

its bad that we have to work at reverting changes and expectations of modified content
re-release doesnt equate to remaster or reboot or reimagined or regurgitated, nor is it a rebalance
re-release should mean simply re-releasing compatible with modern platforms and forward compatible.

similarly to doom's unity and kex re-release
these are not choices i would plan to use, i have the originals as they were intended as good as they could have ever been for 1994.
i will continue to only respect the originals as they were designed
i can use open source GPL ports as i choose to because i was given the rights and freedom

i will not blindly accept to be told how to enjoy the games i used to know
i can not blindly give positive endorsement to ND games for the sake of retro re-releases
i do not have to agree to a lengthy arbitrary clause eula

doom... what is there to say


i have played many versions: floppy disk, dos, source ports, wads, mods, wanna-bes and clones

unfortunately for the modern generation
this is not a version (port) i would choose to play.
neither kex nor that unity trash

give me the originals and im good thanks
the definitive original boomer shooter that everything else is compared to.
the style and expectation that set the standard...

i played them in 1993, and im still playing them
that is all.

truely a classic of its era.
mostly fully voice acted with inventory menu point and click adventure
brilliant pixel art efforts deeply hindered by its visual timing programming
audio offsets and long pauses break the immersion enough to want a fix, which there are none.
perhaps alternates to dosbox may offer more "exact" style gameplay
without it, we're left with the simplest efforts to playthrough
accordingly, the floppy disk came first and the voice over additions really dont sync no matter what you attempt
its either slow as beans or too fast, you can live with slow or ignore the long pauses

not to say the game is without faults.
infact there are some glaring issues, softlocks, moonlogic, even figuring out just what youre supposed to do.
there are no hints in the game like many better adventure games which nudge you ex: "maybe you could do this"
saving often is often a requirement for older games because you can die, softlock, or do progress out of order
such said, to save my insanity, i use a walkthrough which may lack some more hilarious (save and die) trial and error

bonus editions with a lore gallery museum and paper documents
floppy disk & demos have differences from the full cd version
pc98 japanese computer fully playable in dosbox-x or np2kai

a vast library of mythos to pull ideas from, lovecraft still continues to proliferate
