100% Completion Review

This review comes after the game entered what I would call it's '2.0' state post-September armour value changes. I have all weapons / armours at the time of review and every achievement.

Graphics

Not the most important category for me, but for some it's important. This game is drop-dead gorgeous. The landscapes are well crafted with each planet having preset modifiers and terrain that varies from rain-swept grasslands to foggy swamps and sun-baked deserts. The texture quality on both the terrain and enemies is fantastic. The Widescreen implementation is also very well done. My only gripe with this side of the game is that I wish the day/night cycle was more prevalent. I hardly get to dive into a night time mission, and where is DLSS / FSR?

Gameplay

This is what the game is all about. I highly recommend playing with friends, and solo is a whole different game.

Barring this, the gun-play is Chefs' kiss . Nothing comes close to the feeling of shooting the limbs off of a charging Alpha Commander and watching it twitch across the ground towards you. There is a wide variety of weapons to use that for the most part are viable and very fun to use. Melee takes a back-foot in this game, with the only time you'll use it for the most part is when you're out of ammo completely or you're trying to reload and a hunter pounces on you.

The stratagems are your main killing option. A wide variety, from orbital napalm barrages to single precision strikes to take out a single big bug / bot. There are also 'support' options that enhance your individual firepower, such as anti-tank launchers and flamethrowers. Turrets and backpacks offer different ways to play the game, such as being a mobile shock troop with a jet pack or hunkering down with a Gatling sentry to fight off a horde.

Difficulty

The game has, at the time of writing, 10 individual difficulties that cater to a wide array of players. If you want to just have a casual time shooting enemies, put the game on difficulty 1-3 and chill out. Me and my group play between difficulty 7 and difficulty 10. The game is vastly different between these difficulties, with a larger emphasis being put on armoured enemies and the squad bringing a varied loadout to deal with any challenge that is thrown your way. Overall, the game is very fun however you play it.

Price

The game is priced very fair, and I recommend buying it. The Full price is good for if your entire friend group is playing, but the game has a 'fun drop-off' for solo players / non-mic players. There is cross-play to PlayStation if it helps you and your friends play together. If not in a group, wait for a sale.

Can i just start this with a '♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥'

I make this review playing on Nightmare difficulty, and around 5 missions into the game.

It's hard to describe, but i'll do my best to go over everything spoiler-free.

Gameplay

As the devs have been telling us from the start, DOOM Eternal has a much higher focus on movement and strategy. Whilst DOOM 2016 knocked it out of the park when it comes to pure shooter fun, Eternal takes it up another notch adding weak points, grappling, pole swings and much more. Overall difficulty has been increased too, Forcing the player to think about their' actions more often.

Weapons feel weighty and each attatchment and item has its' own use, whether it be to take out lower demons or to stun and destroy the weak spots of specific demons.

Graphics

DOOM Eternal holds up in this department too. Looking more arcade-ey than DOOM 2016 whilst maintaining phenomenal atmosphere and environments. Environmental storytelling has been increased as well. Overall, very well done in this department.

Enemies

more demons than ever. that's all that is needed. Overall demon difficulty is increased a metric ♥♥♥♥-ton for some and decreased for others. the first thing i noticed when i played is that you can't do the old Melee-glory kill on possessed. They took ~8 hits before i died to a single possessed, and they weren't even staggered (this was on nightmare so it may vary for you)

Demons are diverse and each offers a different challenge. Glory Kills are as fantastic as before, and you are greatly rewarded for them, as usual.

Sound Design

Take DOOM 2016s soundtrack, add more bass and electronic components and there you go. It's also much more prevalant here, the music makes itself known and changes as you change your playstyle, from heavy wumps and bass segments on a glorykill to ramping up metal beats as enemies spawn. Mick Gordon nails it yet again. 10/10 sound track

The enemies sound vastly different. but all of them pose as threats with the hisses and screaches to the nearly human-like moans of the fodder enemies. Glory kills still offer the same orgasmic squelching that i'll let you find out for yourself. Gunshots sound heavy, as if actual weight is in the shots themselves.

Overall sound design is a solid 9/10

Story

What can i say, Eternal offers much more in this category than DOOM 2016. The story is gripping, exciting and twisted. 8/10 in storytelling from me, as long as you're okay with grunting as dialouge

Conclusion

Well worth my preorder money. It may be expensive at $100 AUD / $60 USD but in my opinion it is well worth it.

Props to the developers. They were confident in this game and rightly so.
Rip and Tear, until it is done.
