Don't know where all the hate is coming from. Game seems about as difficult as it always has been. New enemies, weapons and mechanics are good. I'm not the biggest fan of the new characters as they often force a very specific, at times un-fun play style upon you, but that's obviously highly subjective. Overall a perfectly good extension of the base game.

Edit: after playing just over half of the new characters to D5, I concede that the difficulty might be a bit higher than in the base game. Challenging, but never unfair. And to be honest, I'm surprised that I'm genuinely challenged by a game that I've already spent 200 hours on and know all of the mechanics inside out. A pretty impressive feat given how much of the game's difficulty comes from knowing the game mechanics. So yes, it's a bit harder than the base game, but to me, it's the perfect difficulty: challenging but rewarding, never unfair.

And I have to change my statement about the new characters. At least the first half of them felt actually really good. You need to figure out what kind of build they work with, and they feel rather specific in that regard, but once you found a feasible weapon/build, they feel fresh and at times even unique. Impressive for a game with such a vast array of existing characters.

Overall, I can only say that my impression of the game has gone way up! Buy it, delve into it, embrace the difficulty!

Editedit: After finishing all of the achievements, I stand by my edited review: difficulty is perfect, new characters/mechanics are perfect, game is perfect.

What an absolute masterpiece. Everything from the story, the game mechanics, the graphics, the audio, the level design to the presentation is fantastic. No weaknesses, all strengths. Hard to believe that it's a one-man project. Massive recommendation if you are into RPGs with good story and great gameplay!

Very basic combat, only very few enemy types, almost no meaningful decisions in a run. Maybe it gets better, when you have all the DLC? Maybe it gets better after 20 hours? I don't know. Really wanted to like the game, because the aesthetics and the world feel great :(

Solid rogue-lite deck builder with a poker theme. Bug free, polished experience. But.. the balancing could use some work. If you're going for high scores/higher difficulties/endless runs, there isn't much variety in the game play. You'll end up looking for the same type of jokers every run, going through the same motions over and over again. Unlike other rogue-lites there's some clear contenders for "best" build that you'll want in each and every run with almost no outliers that steer your in other directions. So the replay value is comparably low for its genre. But 30 hours of fun is still 30 hours of fun. Recommended for that :)

Great game. After 630 hours I now hate my friends and lost all desire to ever amount to anything in life.

I really, really wanted to like this game. I poured 290 hours into the first game and absolutely loved it. Kingmaker is a gem of a RPG that truly lives up to its spiritual predecessors like Baldur's Gate. But then this game.. the writing often times is mediocre or straight up bad. So many characters come across as mere cliches or undercooked fantasy tropes. It's baffling how the story and the world building were one of Kingmaker's strengths and are now Wrath's glaring weakness. Combat, classes, game mechanics are all solid and enjoyable. There are a few things that are downright terrible (puzzles, crusade army balance, ...) and which beg the question whether they went through ANY sort of internal testing, but what good is a RPG if it reads like a 90s weekend cartoon. If you don't put too much importance on the story/characters and are fine with the occasional idiotic feature, you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of WotR, just don't expect any sort of convincing writing.

Very unique game. Don't read more about it. Just take the 95% positive reviews as a hint and buy it. Also: play until the end. It might not be perfectly balanced, but it's a wild ride that will almost surely leave you satisfied.

Early Access Review
Amazing game. Very well balanced and designed. Full recommendation if you enjoy mechanic-heavy, fast-paced rogue-lites.
