So I'll be completely honest, only reason this game was on my radar was because of the Piracy thing the devs did a few years ago, so I wanted to throw in my support. This is edit #2 of my review, after completing the first (and I assume true?) ending of Darkwood. This game was...amazing. I'm not sure I've truly played anything like it before. The combat is fun and intuitive, though I'd caution against being too reluctant to use weapons. I got through the entire game without using the Hunting Rifile, only because I was always waiting for a "boss" that never happened. I assume the game DOES have bosses, I just never saw them myself.

The cast of characters, while grotesque, are charming each in their own little way. Every character has a bit of depth to them, leaving the morality of the game more or less grey, like the color scheme. The game gives plenty of hints of what to do and how to do it, but it is indeed easy to get lost sometimes. Still, I'd recommend giving this game a shot. If for nothing else, then to support the devs. Very excited to 100% this game, and if I come up with anything else, I'll update this review accordingly.

So I'll be completely honest, only reason this game was on my radar was because of the Piracy thing the devs did a few years ago, so I wanted to throw in my support. It's not my type of game and I'm a...little lost, to be blunt, but I've enjoyed it more or less so far. Not a game I can play for more than an hour though. Still, would recommend, though I'm not sure if there's many games like it.

Deathloop is probably one of my favorite games of all time, but more importantly...without a shadow of a doubt, Colt Vahn is my favorite written video game character ever. Heck, he might even be up there with Miles Morales and Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd for favorite written fictional character ever. More importantly, Colt Vahn encapsulates a conundrum that African-American artists have been struggling with for a while, and finally makes the it a point: You can write an African-American character without him saying the N word. By the way Colt speaks, acts, looks, ect, you can tell he is a black man without a single N word being dropped the entire game. It's...amazing. Even barring him being black, Colt is such a funny character. He's so charming, with his reactions being very relatable, and his objectives being straightforward and agreeable. Most of the characters in this game are super well written (to the point where I genuinely felt bad at one point for the main ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, Alexis Dorsey), but Colt absolutely takes the cake and honestly is the highlight of this game.

In terms of accessibility options, this game is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ inclusive. There's everything from different colored Subtitles for Julianna and Colt, to gameplay options like disabling difficulty ramping, making all enemies drop (and therefore carry) rare weapons, and making every body take one shot to kill. These accessibility options ensure that you can play the way YOU want to play, regardless of what the devs intended. Recent years have been much better in terms of accessibility options, but this game really puts it at the forefront and allows you to do exactly what you want with the game.

These are the two things that stood out to me the most, but there are other things that kept me hooked (such as the story, certained puzzles, the guns, ect.) that I just won't get into here. If you own the game, play it. If you don't, it's a high reccomendation on sale for the story alone. At full price, it's a little more questionable (considering my 100% took 50 hours, more then 1$ per hour) but if you're a fan of Arkane Studios work then I could totally see that. Overally, a very good game and I'm so happy I played it.

P.S: The Multiplayer is...more alive then you'd think. It took me like 10 seconds to get into a game as Julianna during peak hours, and there was plenty of raids during my time. So if you enjoy that kind of stuff, know that it hasn't died out quite yet :)

Is it a perfect game? No, not by any stretch of the imagination. Is it one of my favorite games of all time, and part of my top 5 fnaf games? Absolutely. For all the buggy messes in this game, underneath lies a passion from a team who simply bit off more then they can true. You can absolutely see the heart and soul poured into the writing, the relationship between Gregory and Freddy, and especially, ESPECIALLY the minigames. Some of the coolest speedruns ever came from this game due to it's jank, and so many can you beat challenges were completed that for other games wouldn't even be imaginable. I'm not saying this game doesn't have it's faults...it has plenty, and god knows it runs like ass. But at the end of the day, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed alot of it, and I'm excited to see what Ruin has to offer.

Is it a perfect game? No. But what game truly is? And more importantly, if you had fun at the end, did it really matter?

I'm not sure what more about Hades I can say that hasn't already been said, but...I''l try my best.

Overview
Hades is a Hack n Slash Rogue-like, and to be quite frank, it is the most well designed rogue-like I have ever played. Don't get me wrong: I have 666 hours (not joking) in Risk of Rain 2, and love that game just a bit more. But to say Hades is well designed is a massive understatement. Hades is the first rogue-like I've ever been able to play without a Wiki constantly by my side. For gods sake, I was able to 100% it without a guide! While I do love rogue-likes, the staples of Enter the Gungeon and Issac, to my all time favorite RoR2, every single one of them has always had one thing in common: useless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ item descriptions. In every rogue-like I've ever played, I've always had to constantly go to the wiki: to see what certain weapons do, how perks/items work, how to unlock secret and special endings, ect ect. Not with Hades. Hades is straightfoward in an amazing way, and allows you to play the game by just playing the game, without needing a guidebook constantly to figure things out.

Story
But that's not the only good part about Hades, despite being a big perk to it. It's also got an amazing story. In this game, you play as Zagreus: sole heir to the Hades throne, and young and developing godling who is attempting to escape his Father's realm to visit his family upon olympus. While simple at first glance, this story keeps you enthralled the entire way through, and the world around it follows. Every character is charming, having tons of dialogue to say about what's going on, new renovations you can choose to put in place, unique interactions (such as using a Greater Call while against a God's favor), ect. Each character has their own relationship line with Zagreus, and Zagreus himself is amazingly charming. My only slight gripe would be his coming of age: It's not as clear as I would have liked on how he claimed the name of "The God of Blood." However, I will acknowledge that I blazed through the story, not even unlocking certain sidequests until the epilogue, which means I didn't die as much as the devs probably intended. This is remedied, however, by the love relationships Zagreus can form, which got rid of any gripes I had in terms of developing his amazing character.

Gameplay
At the core of almost every game is it's gameplay, and Hades doesn't slouch in this department either. Daedelus Hammer enchantments modify your infernal arms and make them that much more fun or interesting, while sometimes offering unique downsides that just might be worth it. Healing is rather limited (atleast early on), meaning that every bit of damage you take matters. However, this game does have cross-run progression that makes the game significantly easier the more you play, but in an interesting way. Instead of generic buffs like +50% damage or +25% speed (though there are some Mirror Talents that are indeed like that), cross-run perks take a more interesting route, such as giving the player an extra dash, allowing them to defy death, increasing the chance of certain items appearing, ect. They also offer alternative talents that differ from their normal counterparts: instead of dealing more backstab damage, you deal more damage to undamaged foes instead, for example. This allows great build variety, making every players playstyle slightly different. Add on to these Keepsakes (special items given to you by characters), Aspects (different forms of the infernal arms that do different things), the Pact of Punishment (modifiers that make the game more difficult), and it's not that much of a stretch to say every run feels completely different. I played this game for basically 3 weeks straight, and I'm still not sick of it, even after 100%ing it. It's formula is easy to learn, and rewarding to master.

Misc.
There are a few other things I want to mention before I end this review. For one, the music is amazing. It's pretty much a staple of every indie game to have an amazing soundtrack, and Hades is absolutely no exception. Each area has it's own theme that really represents it, and the music has dynamic endings for whenever combat is over. if nothing else, you should definitely give the soundtrack a listen.
The game recommends that you play with a controller (something I funnily enough did not notice until the end of my first playthrough. Personally, I think the KB+M controls are fine: the only gripe I had was with the fists, where doing Dash Punches (space + q) consistently while holding a direction eventually started to hurt my hands. The simple remedy to this was changing cast to Q and special to RMB; this made more sense for me anyway, since Special is much more important then Casting, and it made the experience feel much, much better, I would definitely recommend it if you intend on using KB+M controls like I did.

Conclusion
So, I'll be honest here. In combination with Pathologic 2 and Resident Evil 2, I played Hades along with them for about 2 weeks straight. And it made me feel...happy. As someone with depression, I don't think I've ever felt the amount of Joy I did while playing these 3 games. After defeating the final boss of Hades several times, my heart would always be pounding in it's chest: adrenaline would be pumping through my veins, and I'd pop off, because victory was hard fought, but well deserved. This game deserves the recognition it has gotten as GOTY and having overwhelmingly positive reviews. It truly is a very, very special game, and I would absolutely urge anyone to give it a try, even at full price. To say I'm excited for the sequel is an understatement. Thank you for reading, and have a nice day :)
