One of the best remakes out there. If you loved Bionic Commando on NES, you will love this. If you've never played Bionic Commando, you're in for a real treat. But let me cover some caveats before I explain more about the game. These caveats (especially #1) are why the game has mixed reviews. Which is a shame, but the reality of trying to play a game that's nearing 20 years old.

1) This game won't run on Windows 10 without some work. I don't know if it runs on Windows 11. If you're willing to troubleshoot, check the Discussion page first for latest information. For me, I had to install 2 PhysX packages and download a hacked EXE that allows the game to run on more than 4 cores.

2) The movement in this game is unique. It's a platformer, but your character can't jump. Instead, you have to aim a bionic arm to move vertically. The game centers around this completely. Every level is a bit of puzzle and a bit of a platformer, because not only do you need to figure out how to traverse the level, you need to get the timing on the arm throws correct. This is the core of why the game's so great, but some people don't like it. The character is not snappy and responsive until you've climbed high enough on the skill ceiling to make him that way. But there is a lot of depth to this system, including knocking bullets out of the air, and performing other tricks with the bionic arm.

3) I think you must use a controller to play the game. I'm currently using a Switch controller with Steam support force-enabled. The prompts are all X-Box style, of course. This game is from 2008!

Now, why is the game so great, beside what I've already mentioned? The music is bangin, the level design is flawless, the enemies are paced just right, are fun, and are not bullet sponges. Everything about this game feels master-crafted. This was a perfect remake back in the dark ages of NES remakes. I would say this is the grandfather of the great NES remakes. And because of the unique arm mechanic, you won't find another game out there like it. Every level has a boss, and the boss fights are fun. Note that this is a relatively linear game with levels, not a metroidvania or open-world style game. It's not an exact copy of the NES game; like any great remake, they improved it but kept the core intact. If you want to know even more, there should be some old school reviews online from back in the days when game review sites were actually pretty decent.

TLDR; if you like unique platformers, and you're not afraid of a little troubleshooting, it's more than well worth a buy -- until Capcom remasters it. (And sadly, they probably never will.)

Unfortunately, I can't recommend this game. I hope some philosophy professors can play it and review it, because they would do better than I.

The good:
- Great presentation (graphics and sound) for a quiz game
- Great concept and idea
- I love that it has a glossary to define the fallacies
- There's an easy mode to get you started, then an expert mode to test your understanding

Unfortunately, this wasn't thoroughly reviewed by any outside experts, and an educational product such as this should be. Within just a few minutes of playing, I already found an incorrect definition (the game's definition of Appeal to Consequences), which leads to false information. That alone is damning for a product like this. One can't have an educational game about logic with incorrect information.

Additionally, many of the questions are worded awkwardly, and every once and a while don't even use correct grammar. When constructing English sentences that will be reviewed for formal or informal logical soundness, it's important that they be correct. In some cases it makes it hard to understand the point being made by the speaker, because it's a nonsense statement. It feels very much like it was constructed purely to qualify the condition of a fallacy, yet without any natural English expression behind it. This not only leads to confusion, it makes those quiz questions ineffectual.

This is more of a minor quibble, but sometimes a statement will have multiple fallacies, and one of the options will not be allowed. If you can detect all of the fallacies, you'll get the right answer, but if you can only detect the one that isn't presented, you'll be out of luck, and that feels frustrating. In these cases, the statements could be cleaned up to only contain one fallacy.

TLDR; this is a great idea, and I love that the developer put the work in to get this 90% of the way there. However, its subject matter is one that should have gone through a more rigorous review from outside sources. It feels like a product in the beta stage just before undergoing proper QA from an expert source.

I love Metroidvanias and crafting / survival games, and I found this to be overrated.

As a purported digging game, the digging doesn't add anything interesting to the experience. There is no substantial harvesting / crafting system. They could have left it out and the game would have played mostly the same. It's used only as a very simple mini-game to get from location to location, and not a very fun one at that. It requires no strategy or decision making on the part of the player.

As a Metroidvania, it's lackluster. The upgrades are bog-standard, but the real issue is that the game's combat and explorations systems aren't interesting enough to make me care about the upgrades.

I don't think games have to be innovative, but I do want them to at least be creative where they are derivative. This game is derivative with low creativity. I would compare it to Hollow Knight, which is highly derivative, but also highly creative and immersive. If Hollow Knight is a 10 out of 10, I rate this to be a 6.

That being said, a lot of people enjoy comfortable, casual games with repetitive, simple gameplay. If you're into that, you will probably love this game. Its art style and setting has a lot of charm. It just wasn't enough to keep me hooked.

Note that I bought this game on sale for $2, and I still don't recommend it. However, I'm not basing this review on "value for price", but on value for my time.

If you like the Civilization series, you owe it to yourself to get this. Unless you're allergic to the idea of a game that does not progress past antiquity, there is so much good about Old World. It's more streamlined than Civ, but in a good way and in all the right places. Yet it also adds complexity by way of its royal families and political system. It also has an events system that would make other games jealous; the writing is very good and there are countless events if you end up buying the DLC.

As someone who loved the original Gauntlet and very much enjoys Vampire Survivors, I really expected to at least like this. But surprisingly I didn't, and the reasons why are easy to explain.

But first of all, is my review even valid? After all, I only have 1 hour in the game. Well if you're me, you'll probably say "no" because most games these days simply can't be reviewed in an hour. But this is the first game in recent memory that was so absolutely boring within the first hour, that I just couldn't play any more. Note that I only played single player. Here's why I didn't enjoy this game:

1. There is no enemy variation. There are 3 basic enemies: guy that takes 3 shots to kill, guy that takes 2 shots but is fast, and guy that takes 3 shots but shoots projectiles at you. There are very minor variations, like some projectiles which can be shot and those that can't, but that's the vast majority of enemy complexity. In addition to the basic enemies, there is an occasional elite enemy that has many more hit points and shoots several projectiles in a blast with a varying pattern. New levels don't introduce new enemies. You fight this same score of enemies at least all the way from levels 1 through (I believe) 6. The only thing that changes is their stats increase and their sprite changes.

2. Upgrades are meaningless. As you increase your stats, you power through the levels, at which point the monsters all have higher stats. This means that with like even 7 upgrades to your main weapon (a shiny, golden upgrade), you're still fighting enemies that take 2 or 3 shots to kill. Eventually, at the end of an upgrade line you can specialize your weapon, but this specialization is a sidegrade, not a more effective upgrade. At least this is true of the 2 characters that I played to that point. I'm just not willing to play another hour to find out for two more.

3. Every level is the same. There are 2 main elements to a level: keys for locked walls, and shootable walls. You walk through the maze, looking for a copper, silver and gold key, in that order. Once you have the gold key, you find the exit and leave. Sometimes you might find an exit where you don't need all 3 keys.

Here's the thing: if any one of these things above were not an issue, I think I would have fun with this game. It can be okay for the levels to be repetitive if the enemies aren't, or vice-versa. In this game there's just enough similarity that I never felt as though I was making any kind of choice. Most survival games have quite boring enemies, but the upgrades significantly impact survivability and gameplay.

There are many classes, and the one special class that I unlocked was the elf. The elf has a homing primary weapon and a primeable secondary weapon. It sounds fun on paper, but because there is so little enemy, level or upgrade variation, it doesn't matter that the class was designed this way. The game felt too similarly to the other two classes I played.

Maybe these issues are alleviated after 25 minutes into a run, but having to play through such a 25 minutes every time is just not something I'm eager to do.

As a Gauntlet fan, I want to make a final note that I haven't seen another reviewer mention. There are a lot of mechanics from Gauntlet that this game does not adapt, but the one most worth mentioning is that the levels are randomly generated, and relatively small. For anyone who remembers, especially Gauntlet II on NES, the original game had great level design. Sadly, while these levels are serviceable, no individual level stands out or enhances the gameplay experience.

I rarely play competitive games, but I enjoy this one. It's very cerebral, yet plays quickly. Every match I learn something new. It feels meatier than your typical auto-battler. There is PvE, but it's more for practice and learning, There are actually very good dedicated practice modes. This isn't a game you want to buy to play only against the AI, because it involves things like bluffs and counter-plays; things that game AI can't do well (yet).

This is a good game when you want to play a story adventure game, but you don't want any filler or time spent grinding, or walking around trying to search for things. All of your time will be spent trying to solve the mystery. There is no danger, you are simply trying to piece together the truth of a very strange situation that ended up in police records.

Gameplay involves watching short clips from multiple interviews and trying to think of words that can be used to find more useful clips. You will want to take notes while you play this, to keep track of chronology and testimony of events.

It has a satisfying ending, and doesn't take to long to wrap up once you get there. Don't be afraid to close the chat window and continue searching for clues, if you don't think you're ready yet.

There are other good reviews out there, so I'll just add my thumb hobb here as well.

Please don't interact with it. In fact, leave it alone, because it's happy here and there's a small chance it could metamorphosize. If it follows you home, then I advise you strongly to buy this game and receive instructions on how to deal with it.
