The pièce de résistance of horde shooters, Left 4 Dead 2 is masterfully done, and as a result, other games of the same genre simply struggle to impress in comparison. Ultimately this is a game of situational awareness, teamwork and gunplay in which four players face the AI director which determines the frequency of attacks, supplies and blocked off routes in one of the many campaign maps. This allows better players to be faced with more challenging experiences and likewise, newer players with more forgiving affairs. These variations in player experiences mean the game doesn't get stale compared to scripted events which are common in many other games, which greatly helps replayability.

On that topic, the game is workshop ready. Essentially any aesthetic changes you wish to make, you can. Feel like changing the four survivors to Dark Souls NPCs? Absolutely. My Little Ponies? Sure. My experience is modded for as much realism as the game can squeeze out, and of course all of it is free, which by todays standards is unheard of.

The mechanics of the game are responsive and fluid, tried and tested on the source engine, which also means almost all PCs will run this well. The graphics are somewhat outdated, but not so much as to effect the player experience negatively in any way. And of course, the workshop can improve this aspect if you wish.

The 8 survivors available are for the most part, loveable, relatable and hilarious, and with a slew of interactions between them on top, you really end up liking most of the cast. Music is fairly well done in this game, while not being at the forefront of the player experience, there's clear thought put into its implementation. Certain musical cues will occur to alert the player that certain special enemies are close by.

Essentially the gameplay loop will consist of making your way from point A to point B across a campaign, consisting of a number of maps, concluding in a finale mission with a timed holdout situation (or other twists). Regular horde zombies stand in your way, acting as fodder to slow you down and overwhelm you while a selection of special enemies spawn periodically. These will typically incapacitate one of your team members, so looking out for one another is paramount. These synergies of special enemies become even more important in the Versus game mode, in which teams of four take turns playing as the infected. While considered a toxic element of the game, this mode is very fun. Perhaps I am biased as I've played this game for a very long time, so newer players may feel intimidated by this mode. There are a lot of newbie servers available however which I recommend.

All in all, I would consider this game to be a must own for any fan of zombies or team shooters. For the price, especially during sales, it's an absolute steal.

Pros:
The quintessential horde shooter.
Smooth and responsive gameplay with excellent mechanics for survivors and infected.
Extensive workshop items to help customise your game experience.
AI director improves replayability.
Excellent value for money.

Cons:
Versus can be problematic for newer players - recommended to find servers suitable for newbies.

Ori and the Blind Forest is a beautifully aesthetic yet challenging platformer which progresses fairly typically of metroid style platformers. While the challenge is very clearly present, it doesn't make world progression overly cryptic which is quite nice - most of the challenge comes in navigating hostile environments, which can get a little annoying at times. To give an example, some environmental spikes have extremely deceptive collision detection, and there are certain parts of the game involving extreme timing and perfection and may require several restarts. There were a few areas that felt like some of the harder levels in Super Meat Boy (very challenging). That said, if you play the game right, you won't be backtracking too much, which is a particular peeve of mine typically present within this genre. Acquired abilities are useful outside of their progressionary intent, which is also refreshing.

I can't however mention enough how beautiful this game is. The art style is lush and vibrant; terrain and backdrops look almost as though they have been painted, creating a truly joyful atmosphere. The soundtrack is also pretty solid and only adds to the games charm. There is a story present, albeit a basic one, but this certainly doesn't detract from the general gameplay, and some feels were had in certain parts of the game. I thoroughly enjoyed this game and will look forward to playing the sequel! The most important advice I can give regarding this game, is to not be fooled by the Ghibli-esque visuals. This is a TOUGH game, harder than Hollow Knight and instead more comparable to the Path of Pain sections at certain points.

Pros:
Beautiful game design.
Intuitive and responsive controls.
Well thought out level design with regards to backtracking.

Cons:
Sometimes unfair collision detection.
Brutal platforming challenges at times.
Changes of pacing that can give you a false sense of security.
Enemy variations are a bit lacking.

I wasn't expecting a genuinely creepy experience from a top down perspective game, but Darkwood very much surprised me! Marrying up a satisfying aesthetic with impressive sound design that keeps you on your toes, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this game. It really captures a feeling of hopelessness and inspires you onward to discover more behind the mystery of the games plot both in terms of story progression and general exploration.

The combat can be a little tricky, but I've always been of the opinion that the player should never be a proper threat in a horror game, and while you're not totally useless, it is sometimes better to avoid combat altogether, especially in later parts of the game. The gameplay loop takes players in and out of various bases around the map, encouraging the player to take shelter during nightfall. When the sun sets, it's time to hold the fort while creepy happenings occur outside. In the thick of it, it's not uncommon to end up tightly huddled in a corner of a room, tensely clutching a half broken shovel while the furniture is pushed against the cracks in the walls hoping you don't get seen.

I'm not usually the biggest advocate for small indie titles, but this was genuinely one of my favourite games of the year.

Pros:
Masterful sound design.
Interesting lore and story.
Rewarding exploration.
Entertaining exposition.
Original concept.

Cons:
Day cycles can feel a little short, especially when the player becomes used to the game.
Very punishing game in terms of combat and survival.
Traps in particular can feel quite unfair and annoying at times.
Not the most intuitive inventory management.

Jesus Christ this is a terrible game, if you'd even call it a game. Half of it is like watching a boring movie you're forced to mash your controller at random intervals. Even by the standards of its own universe the series created, it doesn't make sense. There are now zombies who spit acid and hold clubs, despite the T virus zombies just being shamblers in literally every other game. It controls worse than RE5 and even looks worse too somehow, like half the assets are textured like a SNES game. What the hell went wrong here? I only got into the series recently and this is a blight no matter how you cut it. I wanted to go through and try and 100% each game, but man there's no way I can stick with this one. ITS HORRIBLE.

It set itself up for failure IMO when I was forced to mash a button in the first sequence, proceeding 30 minutes of being forced to walk at a snails pace behind idiotic NPCs. The buttom prompts take up a bizarre amount of space on the screen featuring character images for some reason, like the button wouldn't be enough, and I constantly have 'CONTROLS SWITCHED TO CONTROLLER' as they made the inputs so insanely sensitive. Then I get crashes between maps, though this is likely because the game is pretty ancient now.

Honestly the challenge here is sticking with it, it's almost intolerable as far as a game goes. I loved RE2 and RE4 following Leon, and Chris is okay if not a little roided up in the later iterations, but liking characters alone is nowhere near enough to carry this steaming pile of crap for a game.
