Belize is a country with no ancient history. It is located in Central America and was colonized by the British in the 17th century. Prior to European colonization, the region was sparsely populated by indigenous groups such as the Maya, but there were no large, complex civilizations that developed in what is now Belize. Unlike neighboring countries like Mexico and Guatemala, Belize does not have extensive archaeological sites or monuments from ancient Mesoamerican cultures. Its history as a modern nation-state only dates back to the 19th century when it gained independence from the United Kingdom.
