Difficulty 2/10

Positive Aspects

  • Runs stable. No crashes, bugs, or other major errors.
  • Looks really good.
  • Good & dark humor. Sometimes a bit cringy though. This is almost a dealbreaker. Without these jokes and type of storytelling, I'd probably give the game a negative rating.
  • The different areas are well done and differ from each other a lot.
  • You can access pretty much all areas from start. You won't survive long in them though but you can visit them if you want to.
  • Controls. They can be quite difficult to master, especially at the beginning. But they are well-thought and designed, making it easy to combo the different strokes needed. And trust me, you'll need to master that in order to survive.
  • It's a cool take and idea with an action game with RPG elements in it. Where you play as a shark. That's what caught my attention, and I'm guessing yours as well.

Negative Aspects

  • The storyline is both short and a bit dull but serves its purpose.
  • The difficulty. At first, it's kinda difficult, learning the controls and learning when to tackle certain enemies. After that rather steep learning curve, it gets really easy. I died 3 or 4 times within the first 10 minutes. After that, I did not die once until the story was completed.
  • It gets very repetitive quickly. You're doing the same type of missions all the time. Hunt people, other sharks/crocodiles/fishes. Then collect collectibles to upgrade your shark. Then kill more stuff to get evolution points in order to do the upgrade. Then take on hunting parties and kill their leaders. Then you kill the Apex Predator of the zone. Move on to the next one, rinse and repeat.
  • Sometimes creatures clips through walls and gates and attack you while you're not prepared.
  • You'll need to finish the storyline in order to fully upgrade your sharks all mutations. Sure, it's an achievement but it feels kinda pointless as at that point you're done with the game. You can't really enjoy those upgrades now as you won't be playing it[1].

Summary

[1] If you buy the DLC, your mutations/upgrades can be used in that.

I had pretty high expectations of this game, and it delivered. Not in the way I thought it would though. It's not shark vs humankind, as ~85% of your playtime will be spent grinding and killing fish, turtles, crocodiles, sharks, and whales. If you're a casual gamer and just want to spend an hour then and now killing humans(and other things) then yeah sure. Otherwise, no.

It took me around 6 hours to get all collectibles, mutations, max level, and do all the quests, thus finishing the game. I don't think Maneater is worth the listing price of 33,99€. I bought it elsewhere for a fraction of the price and with that in mind, I got good value from my money and feel content. I have not played the DLC but will buy it and play it soon.

Gameplay 7/10
Story 4/10
Controls 8/10
Graphics 8/10
Difficulty 5/10

Positive Aspects

  • Runs stable. No crashes, bugs, or other major errors.
  • Is exactly what it's advertised as, no more, no less.
  • Looks really good.
  • Lots of diverse buildings to play around with.
  • The soundtrack is truly amazing.
  • No stress. No PvP. Surviving against the world rather than enemies(even though there are enemies they aren't really a threat).

Negative Aspects

  • The storyline is a bit dull.
  • The difficulty. Even though a scenario takes quite some time to finish, it isn't really challenging.
  • Optimization. After a while, the game starts to lag a bit. My system should be able to handle 4 simultaneous running instances of this game.
  • Each new level in the campaign requires you to research every technology/fruit/goods again which is a bit dumb.
  • All research/buildings are available on the first mission, as long as you research it.

Summary

Didn't have high expectations for Aven Colony and I was surprised at how much I liked it. Is it worth the full price? No. On sale? Get it!

Positive Aspects

  • Runs smoothly and stable. No crashes, bugs, or other major errors.
  • Is exactly what it's advertised as, no more, no less.

Negative Aspects

  • The music will fade whenever there is a sound cue playing. Very annoying and had me mute the entire game.
  • The stories are a bit dull.
  • The difficulty. You can finish each of the 3 stories in about 10 minutes. You just have to click a few times and make some choices and you're done.
  • Controls. The game should really utilize the use of right-clicking to consume and ESC to go back.
  • Translations should be better. Some sentences are clearly automatically translated through Google Translate.

Summary

Didn't have any expectations considering the very low cost. It has some flaws but it's pretty much as advertised.

Early Access Review
Gameplay 2/10
Story 2/10
Controls 8/10
Graphics 8/10
Difficulty 10/10

Positive Aspects

  • The soundtrack is truly amazing.
  • The setting and the graphics are really good and welcoming.
  • Easy to use controls. Scrolling should be a bit faster though.
  • Frequent updates and a detailed Trello with a roadmap[trello.com]. Active developers and community at their Discord-server[discord.com].
  • Runs smoothly and stable. No crashes, bugs, or other errors.

Negative Aspects

Cartel Tycoon is pretty much unplayable at this point.

  • Your buildings require lieutenants, and you can only have 14, plus the leader. 15 is not nearly enough considering some structures need them or they will be lost, and there are other gangs/cartels attacking, and not to forget raids by police, DEA, CIA, military, and eventually US military as well. Since there are 10 areas and in every area, and you need at least one freight hub and one city, which both require lieutenants guarding them or they'll be given up, it's not possible to hold the entire map with 15 lieutenants. And that's not including all lieutenants needed for regular buildings and to repel all attacks, which happens each and every minute. Not to mention you need lieutenants to take over/destroy other buildings and move resources.
  • You need to laundry your dirty money into clean money. Problem is that is also very unbalanced and slow.
  • Output levels from buildings are also unbalanced and the margins are razor-thin. If you place one building too much, you'll go bankrupt.
  • Once you made a few mistakes, and trust me, you will, you'll have the authorities after you permanently. You can temporarily lower the raids but you can't go back on your wanted level.
  • The cooldowns. All of the above would be manageable if the cooldown(and the cost) were lowered a lot. As it is right now, the terror(wanted-level) rises faster than you can lower it just because of the cooldowns, making the game impossible to beat.
  • The journalist events. Don't even get me started on those. They pop up frequently for no apparent reason(though the game states it's because you've spent too much money which is not true), and you have 3 options, bribe them(which is very difficult considering the authorities keeps attacking everything so you cant get dirty money needed to bribe them), kill them, or let them be. The last 2 options increase the terror(wanted-level) a lot. This mechanic is game-breaking and will trap you in an infinite loop that requires your whole playthrough to revolve around combatting this. This type of event needs to be decreased and/or the timer to complete it needs to be a lot longer as it takes away all the fun in playing.
  • The lieutenants require more and more money all the time. In the end, you'll need to kill them(and increasing the terror(wanted-level) and you'll get even more authorities attacking you). And as mentioned before, since there are too few lieutenants available you'll also need to move them around constantly. As a result, gameplay becomes hectic and tedious.
  • Authorities don't raid other gangs/cartels. Only you. It's everyone in the world against you.
  • Even though you go legit and only grow vegetables and try to sell them, the terror(wanted-level) will rise since the authorities believe that you are spending money too quickly in that case as well.
  • Lack of exportcenters. Some regions don't even have a single one and the only one you can build is a small airport, which you need to research first. And the 3 different types also accept different types of cargos. And the export rate is very slow, the airport and harbor are not worth it. It won't matter how many farms or plantations you have, since the airport and harbor hold so little cargo and there are several days between exports. As stated earlier, it's not possible to complete bribing missions with an airport or harbor. You need the road export structure which is only available in 2 regions and cant be manually built. So basically all the other 8 regions are unplayable.
  • You can't change the production output in your buildings, making them overfull and throwing away resources. And having your buildings overfull will also cause a raid from authorities, which will either seize the property or destroy it, and the adjacent buildings as well. An option to stop production at a certain value is needed.
  • You cant change difficulty(yet).

Summary

Extremly unbalanced, making it very difficult. It's not worth the full price. As a matter of fact, it's so unplayable right now that it's not even worth $1. But, it's getting updated regularly. It's an early access game and I don't regret the money spent as I believe this will be a really good game over time based on received feedback. I'm glad I supported the developers and hopefully, they'll sort out these types of issues. I'll make a revisit in half a year and see if things have improved.

Very easy to use and there are tons of community-made wallpapers available. Well worth the 3-4 bucks it costs.
It has some stability issues where the program fails to save your wallpapers when using 2 or 3 monitors and put your PC in sleep mode. That's going to be fixed 'soon' according to the developers.

  • Once you get a hang on what to do and when to do it, the difficulty drops from like a 7 to a 2 in an instance.
  • Kinda repetitive. You basically do the same things over and over.
  • The story is great, but the game doesn't focus that much on it sadly.
  • If you can see past these issues it's quite fun for a while. The sandbox mode is the way to go.
  • Soundtrack is truly amazing.

Is it worth the $30? No. Get it on sale.

Not a super big fan of realistic shooters. Just tried this a couple of hours since I got it for the DayZ-mod really.
