A great game to play cooperatively with people in that it's quite casual, so I recommend voice communication. Has a lot of nice materials to go build things with, and the exploration and item/armor collection takes up a large chunk of your beginning game.

Hardmode makes playing a world more interesting once you get going. After reaching end game you may consider building your own world or looking at what the community has made with scenarios and other custom-made worlds
