Charming little indie title creatively named 'Risk of Rain' even though dire weather conditions will be the least likely of your concerns in-game. Much like its rouge-like indie brethren, 'The Binding of Isaac' & 'Rogue Legacy', Risk of Rain has the player trekking through randomly generated stages, looking for a way forward whilst searching for powerful items that, in hope, will make you broken enough to tackle the overwhelming odds the game throws at you.

Make no mistake when I say that this game is HARD, as hard as any of the titles previously mentioned, but perhaps a bit more forgiving than both. There is always a clear sense of progression even though it is a rouge-like and the real draw of the game lies in its -class- system. The player is given the option of choosing between 10 different characters at the start of every playthrough, most of which are unlocked by meeting special conditions. There are tons of unlockables and each character has a highly unique, defined skillset and play style, which add endless flavor to the game because not only are you getting a different experience each time with the randomly generated stages; each run can also be worlds apart due to how each class plays out.

Overall, a really great gem of a game and there's not much I have to say about it from a negative standpoint. It can be a little frustrating at the very start with nothing unlocked and only one character available, but it is only a matter of time before the game opens up and becomes far more enjoyable. The item buffs you can collect are all fairly ingenious and well thought-out but the game suffers a little from framerate issues in the final stages. Although that could be expected what with the -hundreds of missiles- probably flying around on your screen by then. ;)

A risk of rain? Maybe not.
A risk of losing track of time? Most definitely.
