tl;dr: this is a very good game that, when it goes on sale, is a tremendous value. if you're a new player, try to avoid the people saying this game is bad because the developers did a thing they didn't like. scroll to the bottom for a more 'straightforward' review of the game & its content if a long aimless rant about the best game in the universe isn't your thing. sorry about the five minutes of your life you're about to inevitably waste.

Once upon a time, a few friends who were really into Payday: the Heist all boarded the hype train release of Payday 2. Swept up in all the excitment & wanting to feel included, I bought the game as soon as I was able to. I believe it was the first sale the game went on after launch, probably when Armored Transport came out but who knows?

There was a lot I liked but a ton I really hated, for one: the fact that you had to buy a skill to answer a pager was pretty asinine, it made playing anything in stealth extremely specialized & the heists I went on with my friends then were all pretty lackluster. I, having no idea what I was getting into & they, not realizing I had no idea what I was getting into didn't really mesh & as such, I inevitably stopped playing the game.

Then, the Hotline Miami Heist came out & I bemoaned the fact that I could not play this game for the life of me. More time passed & the game changed drastically in that period. More & more DLC was released & people started to get really excited for the game. I started playing again & the game felt a little more finished, but I still had no valid crew to speak of. The same friends were around, but they were more interested in getting achievements for me without even explaining how to do them.

I managed to learn how to play when another good friend of mine actually took the time to start explaining things to me, I started out crawling & am now a professional track sprinter & I would absolutely not be here without him personally. He got me into this game & we started on that grind.. then came microtransactions.

Though, many others have written guides, forum posts, etc. on weapons (especially after the rebalance) it will always be playing with a group of people you are comfortable with (who preferably know what they're doing & have a great deal of patience) that makes or breaks a game for you. Having forums & guides available is a blessing in a game like this, especiailly on DW when the numbers matter the most.

NOTE: This game requires a lot of reading & not just in game, but everywhere. Steam Forums, Reddit, {Gaming Blog Site}, etc. You need to know what everything does & how to make it do those things. Sure, enough experiementing & you'll likely find something that works for you, but loud Deathwish without the appropriate gear/skills/crew? Get that ♥♥♥♥ out of here. So what does this mean for you, the potential buyer? Well right now it means there are a lot of angry people who feel cheated & I guess it's sort of understandable? Kind of? But regardless, it is making the game less & less accessable to newcomers & this is a bad thing because this game is one that's actually worth playing.

Don't like the DLC? Don't buy it. Completionist? Wait for it to go on sale. -$2 is ususally well worth it for extra weapons, masks, achievements, etc. Not to mention either new heists or new characters. At the end of the day all of the DLC is still optional, if your friends have a bunch of heists you don't you're not going to be left out as you can actually join them & play those heists. Purchasing the content just unlocks the weapons & gives you new challenges & goals, as well as the ability to host your own lobbies of those particular jobs.

Microtransactions are almost completely meaningless in the game at this point as they do not offer any more of an advantage as the newly introduced (because you guys had a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) stat boosts. Drills & safes also drop in game though as imagined they are rare enough to where maybe you would spend $2.50 to open up a safe just to see what happens? Why is it such a bad thing to add? If you don't like it, don't spend your money on it. If you really want specific skins for weapons, buy or trade for them with other players in the community. If anything I really do believe this was seen as something that would've strengthened the community, considering other games have done it in the past with at the very least a bit of success.

I really didn't want to make this review about this subject, but I feel like at this point it's written itself. We, the community, need to make this game great again. Why? Because talking about different skill-builds, various plans for stealth or loud, & even just general maskchat is more interesting, more engaging & especially more welcoming to players of all backgrounds than what's currently being discussed.

So here we are, 93 updates later & I've lost count of how many DLC releases. Today marks the release of the newest DLC, the Goat Simulator Heist. Come on guys, stop being angry & let's just steal some goats. If you want to bring this game down, stop playing & stop talking about it because you'd be surprised how quickly it loses any sense of real importance in your day to day life once you stop letting it. So be mad, don't buy anymore of the DLC, uninstall the game but for the love of god stop spreading your cancerous ♥♥♥♥ all over the community of people who still think this game is worth paying for.

If this game at all interests you, buy it when the time is right for you. Find a group, or even just a player that will take you under their wing & show you the ropes on a few heists & before you know it you'll see why this game is so engaging as well as what makes it different from many of todays shooters.

Overall review: Excellent!
Gameplay: Solid, tense, fast or slow paced with many playstyles to choose from.
Vareity: A ton. Stealth missions ranging from formulaic to incredibly tricky puzzles that will test your patience to it's core. Weapons & weapon mods, masks & enough characters that the Payday Gang is pretty much it's own syndicate at this point.
Graphics: Who cares? It's gorgeous & when you drop a molotov onto an enemy for the first time you really see where those few dollars went.
Pros: DLC heists aren't locked to those who own the jobs, meaning if your friends want to play The Golden Grin Casino Heist you can join them without actually owning the content.. But I'll get into that later. Tons of weapons to choose from, free content, developers that actively try to reach out to & communicate with their fanbase.
Cons: Microtransaction drama, the games HUD by default is a little lackluster, though there are many HUDs available, even some supported/approved by the developers of the game. Sometimes people cheat I think personally that's kind of boring but some people like it so hey cheating could kind of be a pro depending on what type of person you are.
